A Glossary of Nexus
As with any great city there are turns of language and phrases that are peculiar to it, and identify the user as an inhabitant of Nexus to others. Place any such below (in alphabetical order, please).
Entries
ans lemias: adjective phrase (insulting) from the intermediary language of vulgar Old Realm (where it meant "without thought"); pronounced "ahnz leh-mee-ahs", ans lemias is a mild insult, equivalent to "idiot", "stupid", or "useless". In most districts, it is often used jokingly. - CaptainPenguin
Big Durian, The: another epithet for Nexus. - BrilliantRain
Bissies or Abissies: derogatory epithet referring to the fashion scene for headless, which is rife with dark colors and symbolism of death and the macabre. Originated from the observation that these young people "...are trying so hard to be abysmal. But they're really just b**ches and sissies". - Scytheus
Bloodnut: a term indicating one is preoccupied with violence to the exclusion of most other pursuits, usually due to an inborn hatred of humanity, simple passion for it, or traumatic childhood. Real bloodnuts hate anybody who claims to be a bloodnut but isn't. They die violent deaths. - Han'ya
Clear as a Dragon-Blood's conscience: a term indicating cloudy, dark, or oxymoronic statements/actions. - Issaru
Doing Battle: dancing to Steel music. Moshing. And, at concerts, the place where doing battle is done is in the "Charnel Pit". - Scytheus
Drinking Boots: boots with several inches of lift to them, popularized during a period when the Civilities included a prohibition on serving alchohol in public houses to those unable to see over the bar. Several taverns and bars in Nexus still have a pair of 'loaner' drinking boots on display. -szilard
drishtu: adjective (insulting), derived from the obscure Southern language of Tlolek (the original word was drishtalshtush, "cattle excrement", though it has become more severe with time). This commonly-heard insult (pronounced "dreesh-too") is equivalent to "shithead" or "shitbag". - CaptainPenguin
gish: a term from an obscure dialect of Airtongue meaning the act of being antisocial by virtue of oddness. Gish is also a noun meaning an obscure topic or inside joke. The plural is gishm. (That's gi-sh-um.) - Han'ya
Gone under the bridge: slang phrase in Bastion and parts of Cinnabar, referring to having sex, particularly for the first time. To say that someone hasn't gone under the bridge is an insulting way to insinuate that he or she is a virgin. - Everyl
Headless: fans and listeners of Steel music (a sort of Second Age version of Death Metal). So named because the main symbol of Steel music is the guillotine blade.- Scytheus
Nexian: 1 (noun) of or pertaining to Nexus. 2 (adjective) extremely filthy or infested, perverted - Paladinltd
shige: an expression derived from the High Holy Speech word shilsegegel, meaning "the incarnate principle of mystery." Shige is a word used to indicate one hasn't the faintest idea what's going on. An English equivalent would be "I don't get it", "I'm so confused", or "whatever". Used more often by the elderly. - Han'ya
sieng: adjective (complimentary), from the dialect of High Realm spoken in the Hyong Towns of the East. Sieng (pronounced "see-ehng") is a complimentary word, originally meaning something like "honorable" or "trustworthy", but since nobody in Nexus is trustworthy or honorable, it has come to mean, simply, "pleasant" or "agreeable" -- except among Nexus merchants, who use it sarcastically to refer to traders and proprietors who weasel or cheat their customers (or, at least, those who weasel or cheat their customers more than usual). - CaptainPenguin
trash eagle: originally referring to the leader of a group of garbage scavengers or homeless folk, it is used as a mild insult. - CaptainPenguin
Waster: an abuser of hallucinogenic drugs. -Suzume (c.f. Cobblepaint Avenue)
ze-ze: Nexus Riverspeak expression (pronounced "zay-zay") relating unimportant talk -- equivalent to the English "blah-blah-blah". - CaptainPenguin
Comments
there was a thread about nexus names over on the exalted compendium and they came up with The Big Durian, which is apparently a fruit that smells like rotting meat.

- Wow, moreTheNexusProject/Glossary/B> shades of Terry Pratchett? Does it by any chance have spikes the colour of earwax?
~ Shataina
- 0.0 OMG! -Suzume
- I love you, for you have lead me to a site that has Durian recipes! -Okensha
Err... A note on the "bissies" or "abissies" thing... It's presumable that they don't speak English in Nexus, so I find it unlikely that they would have such a word in their vocabulary. They might have something which is a combination of insults in their language, but it would not be a combination of bitch and sissy, which are English words (especially "sissy", since it is highly idiomatic to English). - CaptainPenguin
- But I think you've jumped over a big problem. With a few notable exceptions most of us speak (and write)english. I understand where you're going but I don't think we all want to sit around making several new lanuages just to be absolutely accurate - Paladinltd
- Well, yes, I know that. But, I dunno', I guess it's just a matter of my personal tastes- it damages the setting's sense of versimilitude for me. Ah, well. - CaptainPenguin
- To each his own - Paladinltd
hey Scytheus, I bet you've never seen "Boondock Saints"? Oh, and CaptainPenguin, there's nothing *wrong* with putting your username in double brackets, but it'll prolly speed up your typing to keep in mind that WikiWords don't require them.
~ Shataina
- Oh. Okay. Woops! :) - CaptainPenguin
Um, no I haven't. Was it a good movie? Or, did I do something wrong? - Scytheus
