The Good user Grimjaws began this project as a personal endeavor and most of the content that will appear here is owed to him: this author thanks him profusely for his unstinting work and good grace. However: like most of the people on this wiki he has abandoned his pages and projects and so: though in some lights it might be seen as plagiarism: I am copying the data he assembled and making finishing the work a communal project for the benefit of all.

Introduction
This project is meant to give players and GMs in Exalted a large group of useful animals for their games. This project originated from Grimjaws interest in having a decent sized pool of animals for Lunar characters to fill their Heart's Blood Background. A description of the various ecological zones of Creation can be found on the Ecology of Creation page.
Rubric
When filling in entries the following guidelines should be adhered to:
First try not to write specific entries for each species and subspecies but rather have notes on a single group of species such as 'Foxes' with sub entries under that page for the most significant species, such as 'Arctic' and 'Red'.
This rule does not hold for species which are 'significantly divergent' in their statistical capacities and physiognomy such as between a Dolphin and an Orca, or a Zebra and a Draft Horse.
Second when stating a new creature move it from Unstated/Suggested Creatures into Creatures to be Categorized, then leave the categorization to the Project Managers, so that it will be placed in the locations where it belongs.
While anyone is welcome to participate it should be noted that all participants are expected to be polite and respectful, disputes are to be handled on the entries talk page and NOT with an Edit War. What we most need right now are a full selection of creatures not perfectly polished entries.
Entries
Each Entry will be placed into one or more categories based on the ecology and range of the creature these categories are divided by cardinal direction, then primary element, such as all flying creatures being noted under Air and Aquatic Animals under Water, and then animal role according to the bureau of nature.
The Cardinal Directions admitted for this categorization are six: North, East, South, West, Center, and 'Universal' for animals found over most of creation.
Next animals are divided by element along the following lines: Any animal which flies or lives even part of it's life in the air is an 'Air' Animal. All animals which live on or in trees and plants are considered to be 'Wood' animals. Those Animals which burrow or dig in the ground for their living arrangements and food are called 'Earth' Animals. Animals Such as fish, otters, pigs, and dolphins which live their lives in the water or waterlogged areas such as marshes are considered 'Water' animals. Finally, animals which fit none of these categories, such as dogs, cats, horses, and sheep are marked as 'Fire' animals, as in the main they either come from the south or associate with humans or dragon kings for their livelihood: the only natural species which have mastered fire.
Bellow this animals are categorized according to the specifications of the Hierarchy of Function, as that is the one that allows us to divide the animals the most simply. According to the specifications of this page the Hierarchy of Function categorizes animals in the following manner: Carnivores: are beasts that eat other beasts as their primary nourishment. Herbivores: are beasts that eat plant matter to survive. Functionals: are creatures that do neither of these things for their food requirements, such as the tube worms of deep sea vents which filter energy rich minerals from the water and a great many behemoths.
Note that the Bureau does not admit a separate category for Omnivores: they fold them into one of the three categories above: generally filling them as carnivores.
North
East
Please note that the Categorization of 'East' covers both the far east and the scavenger lands.
South
West
Center
Universal
Creatures Filed in the 'Universal' category are found with minimal variation across at least 3 of the cardinal directions, and therefore are placed here to reduce duplication. Their entries will note their exact ranges.
Air
Carnivore
Creatures Needing to be Categorized
The Following Creatures have statistics but have not been integrated into the categories above: if you have been aclaimed a 'Project Manager' please take a moment to transfer these creatures to appropriate sections above.
For the moment this section is taken up mostly by the good work of Grimjaws the original architect of this project.
