Journal of the Cascade Years

Paradise Cloud, Historian and Testifier to the Anathema's conceit, writes:

In all the years of their rule, a scholar of this period will struggle to find a more pompous author than Decia Dakar. In his writing we find evidence of the corruption of the unclean Anathema, for, and some will find this hard to merit, he outstrips even Flawless Mirror in his duplicity, swagger and sheer vanity. To cite but three examples from his Journal of the Cascade Years (or Journal of Depravity as I prefer my students to think of this licentious tome):

"I have discovered that the aphorism 'Like a second skin' is, if you will excuse me the pun, rather more fitting than most realise. Since I took up baronenis, I find that the skin, freshly flayed and still pleasingly warm, of a local peasant, allows me the freedom of movement to have a clear edge over my competitors. They don't approve, of course, but I cannot allow the petty opinions of others to interrupt my actions."

"How dare that fool, Flawless Mirror, make a mockery of me so! I blame him entirely for my failure to be appointed Cataphractoi Insensiblis. Just because he wears those gauche shimmering skins he is deemed 'more appropriate to the post'. My outfit and ensemble were far superior, but I was hardly given a quarter of the gasps of admiration he commanded in the Deliberative. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he somehow engineered the Iridescent Decade exactly for this purpose! I shall have the last word on this matter, I assure you. Already I have began to manufacture evidence that it was actually that dolt, Phallus Mirror (sic.), who was behind the extermination of the Alabaster Enforcer. He'll pay. Oh, yes! He will indeed!"

"I have decided to change title. Satrap of Harmony has suited for the last week but I feel, as a reflection of the obvious fact that my beauty grows with every passing day, a new designation is fitting. Hm. Beauty In The Eyes Of Others Beholding Me, perhaps? No. Too clumsy. Excellence Inculcate? No. The Winsome Tzar of Pulchritude? No no no. The Cascade of Perfection. Yes, that will do. And in honour of my new name, I shall put out the eyes of all retainers who look upon me this day, that my beauty may be last thing their eyes ever see. And also, I shall rename this journal."

I think little else needs to be added to allow the reader to understand this vainglorious aspect of the Anathemas' character...
