How to introduce new players to Exalted?

I'll be putting up the contents of what I have so far for the Primer Pack once my head starts working again. For now, this is just a holding page.

Updates

8 Dec 2003 - Garden sent out the Primer Pack today but isn't feeling that well, so I thought I'd put it up on here. 27 Nov 2003 - Primer pack contents\\ So I've been starting to get to work on this primer pack thing, in the sense of trying to figure out what to put into it, anyway. So far I have:

  • Basic system - mostly going over the basic differences between Exalted and WoD seeing as he knows WoD.
  • Setting - sticking just to what he'd know in character.
  • Combo Guide - I'm thinking I may leave this until after he's got to grips with the basics though.
  • Stunt Guide - I could actually do with one of these for all my players, they do tend to fall down a bit on stunts, rarely getting above 1 die... they don't like to use the scenery, especially if it means creating bits of scenery themselves. I think it's that they don't like messing around with 'my' world, so I need to get them to see that it's their world too... *makes thoughtful 'hmmm' noises*
  • Mailanka's Combat101 - Mailanka seems to think that it's dated, maybe it is, everyone's view of the game matures over time, especially as new supplements come out. But it's still an excellent example of Exalted combat for a new player.
  • More of Mailanka's stuff, like his Basic Tactics Guide - what can I say? The man is a god.

My first thought once I started noting all these down was to turn to the Quickstart Guide, d'oh! I'd forgotten about that. So I took a look at it. The Setting section is not bad, but lacking in some respects - does it even mention the dangers of flaunting your Anathema status and getting the Wyld Hunt called down on your head? Like Senji pointed out, that's kind of a big thing. The Character Creation section - no point, he asked me to create his character for him. And the System section - do I even need to say how useless that is? I'd heard the rumours, but never actually taken a look myself until now.

So I can send him some of the stuff from the Setting section, but it needs adding to and personalising for my campaign (we're three and a bit years in, Stuff has happened). But everything else I'm going to have to write myself. Fortunately CorlanDashiva has offered his help, he's not getting any extra xp out of it though ;)\\ \\

25 Nov 2003 - New player\\ My next game is going to be on the weekend of 13th/14th December. I'm actually probably going to be running three games over the weekend, starting the Friday night, but I have all that planned already. The problem is that I have a new player starting. He's used the storyteller system before, playing WoD, but never the Exalted variant, and I'm wanting to put together a sort of 'primer pack' of the basics of the setting and system. So far I know I want to send him Mailanka's Combat 101, but does anyone have any reccomendations of what else to tell a new player?

Be paranoid with that Orichalcum Powerbow; the Wyld Hunt are around every corner! -- Senji

I'll put up his character sheet tomorrow morning (meaning the period of time after I get up rather than AM or PM) in case anyone would have any character specific recommendations. But for now, he's a Dawn Caste archer based on Legolas.

The sample adventure Tomb of Five Corners seems to be a quickstart pack in disguise, doing a much better job of it, using the proper system, but unfortunately having very little setting. They do mention the Wyld Hunt though. Considered using that?
