Seven Leaping Dragons Style

Background

Aggressive and athletic, this style offers many benefits to the attack-oriented fighter. One can jump over obstacles, bound away from attacks, deliver powerful kicks, or strike from above. The style’s weakness is a lack of defenses; a stylist gains some minor protective abilities, but no bonuses to parry or dodge pools. This is a Terrestrial style.

This style’s Charms treat attacks with an iron boot or god-kicking boot as unarmed attacks. All of these Charms are compatible with armor unless otherwise specified.


Snow Dragon’s Leap

Cost: 1 mote
Duration: Instant
Type: Simple
Minimum Martial Arts: 3
Minimum Essence: 2
Prerequisite Charms: None

The character flashes through the air like sleet. Instead of her normal movement action, she leaps her Martial Arts (or Athletics) x 5 yards vertically, or twice that horizontally. In addition, she may make a normal Martial Arts attack at the end of the leap, though the attack gains no benefits from this Charm.


Fire Dragon’s Dance

Cost: 3 motes
Duration: One scene
Type: Reflexive
Minimum Martial Arts: 3
Minimum Essence: 3
Prerequisite Charms: Snow Dragon’s Leap

Like a flame before the wind, the character twists aside from danger. For the rest of the scene, all attempts to attack the character are at +1 difficulty. This Charm may only be used once per scene.


Forest Dragon’s Pounce

Cost: 2 motes
Duration: Instant
Type: Reflexive
Minimum Martial Arts: 3
Minimum Essence: 2
Prerequisite Charms: None

The martial artist snaps forward at her opponent like a bent branch suddenly released. At the end of a jump that positions her next to an opponent, the character may invoke this Charm to make a kick, tackle or clinch attack using her Dexterity + Martial Arts + Essence. This may be combined with any other Charm that allows for increased jumping ability.


River Dragon’s Rush

Cost: 4 motes
Duration: Instant
Type: Supplemental
Minimum Martial Arts: 3
Minimum Essence: 3
Prerequisite Charms: Forest Dragon’s Pounce

As the waters of the river flow irresistibly toward the sea, the character attacks with irrefutable force. This Charm increases the difficulty to block a single Martial Arts attack by the martial artist’s Essence rating.


Seven Leaping Dragons Form

Cost: 5 motes
Duration: One scene
Type: Simple
Minimum Martial Arts: 4
Minimum Essence: 3
Prerequisite Charms: Fire Dragon’s Dance, River Dragon’s Rush

The character assumes the coiled bearing of the Seven Leaping Dragons. Her every movement brims with vitality as she flows from one posture to the next, always in motion. While this Form Charm is active, the character adds her Essence rating to her Athletics score and her Initiative total. Seven Leaping Dragons Form is incompatible with the use of armor. A character may not use more than one Martial Arts form-type charm at a time.


Jade Dragon’s Might

Cost: 2 motes
Duration: Instant
Type: Supplemental
Minimum Martial Arts: 4
Minimum Essence: 3
Prerequisite Charms: Seven Leaping Dragons Form

The character strikes with the strength of the Imperial Mountain, crushing foes with the massive weight of jade. She adds her Essence rating in dice to the damage roll for a single unarmed attack.


Ebon Dragon’s Grasp

Cost: 2 motes
Duration: Instant
Type: Supplemental
Minimum Martial Arts: 4
Minimum Essence: 3
Prerequisite Charms: Seven Leaping Dragons Form

The character’s grip grows as close and inescapable as the coils of a dragon’s shadow. She adds her Martial Arts to a single attempt to initiate or maintain a clinch.


Scarlet Dragon’s Rage

Cost: 5 motes, 1 Willpower
Duration: One turn
Type: Reflexive
Minimum Martial Arts: 5
Minimum Essence: 4
Prerequisite Charms: Jade Dragon’s Might, Ebon Dragon’s Grasp

With the illimitable fury of a dragon breaking its chains, the character lashes out at her foes with dreadful fury. She adds her Essence rating to every unarmed Martial Arts attack she makes this turn. These attacks inflict lethal damage. In addition, every target struck by her attacks must roll Strength + Resistance against a difficulty of her Martial Arts; failure results in knockback (see the Exalted core rulebook, p. 235).

Neat style. However, you have made a lot of the Charms Reflexive, even ones where Supplemental would be the normal type (specifically Jade Dragon's Might & Ebon Dragon's Grasp). I figure this is to take advantage of the DBs free Reflexives ability, but I'm not sure if they really warrant it. - Moxiane

i agree with Moxiane but i also belive that Fire Dragons Dance should be simple and possible cost more motes and maybe a willpower.All-in-all tho the style is friggin awesome, and combined with 5 Dragon Martial Arts it's devestating. - Issaru

Thanks for the advice, guys! I've made the Jade and Ebon Dragon moves supplemental; on second look, they're strong enough to remain viable even without being reflexive. I've also rewritten Fire Dragon’s Dance. As for the other Charms, are they balanced? Are they costed properly? I'm particularly interested in opinions on the Form Charm; it has some significant uses, particularly as it boosts Feats of Strength, but I'm worried that it may not be deemed worthwhile in actual combat. Would some kind of soak bonus make it too powerful for a Terrestrial Form Charm? - Quendalon

As far as i can see yes the charms are balanced; although i think Scarlet Dragon’s Rage could have stayed Reflexive i liked it that way as a nasty DB surprise.Scarlet Dragon’s Rage so screams i'm in your a** now you pathetic ananthema IMO.And as far as weirdo soak no it shouldn't be a problem. - Issaru

Nice fixes. :) Now... Fire Dragon's Dance - can you use it multiple times to increase the difficulty to hit you loads? If so, is there a limit on how far you can raise it? - Moxiane
