Introduction

I like languages. And so the Realm Script used periodically in Exalted drew my eye. I wondered if there was a logic behind it, a full language perhaps.

I then got the Making of CD from my friendly local gaming store, and had a chance to speak with some of the devolpers at Dragon*Con. They both confirmed that the Realm Script is a simple substitution with some symbols standing in for letter couples.

There's not a good breakdown of the Realm Script online now- so I'm starting from scratch here. :)

Working Material

Here's all the current Realm to English that we can be 99% sure we know the English.

Core Rule Book- Binding or pg 10, Upper left corner (Exalted)\\ pg 11, upper right corner (Introduction)\\ pg 21, upper right corner (Chapter 1; all other chapters as well, which gives the nunbering system through 9)\\ pg 39, lower right (V'neef)\\ pg 40, middle left (Ragara)\\ pg 40, upper right (Cynis)\\ pg 40, lower right (Cathak)\\ pg 41, middle left (Nellens)\\ pg 41, middle right (Tepet)\\ pg 42, lower left (Mnemon)\\ pg 42, middle right (Sesus)\\ pg 43, upper left (Iseli)\\ pg 43, upper right (Ledaal)\\ pg 43, lower right (Peleps)\\ Exalted: The Dragonblooded- binding or pg 10, Upper left corner (Exalted Dragonblooded)\\ (All the damn provinces and cities on the Dragonblooded interior cover)\\ Exalted: The Abyssals- binding or pg 10, Upper left corner (Exalted Abyssal)\\ Exalted: The Lunars- binding (Exalted Lunar or Lunars- not sure about the plurality)\\ Exalted: The Sidereals- binding or pg 10, Upper left corner (Exalted Sidereals)\\

First Step - Word breakdown

Exalted: 7 Letters, vcvccvc. 5 Symbols\\ Introduction: 12 letters, vcccvcvccvvc. 8 Symbols\\ Chapter: 7 letters, ccvccvc. 4 Symbols.\\ V'neef: 5 letters, c'cvvc. 4 Symbols.\\ Ragara: 6 letters, cvcvcv. 3 Symbols, with ABA pattern.\\ Cynis: 5 letters, cvcvc. 3 Symbols, with ABA paatern.\\ Cathak: 6 letters, cvccvc. 3 Symbols, arguably with ABA pattern. (I'll look at this again)\\ Nellens: 7 letters, cvccvcc. 5 Symbols, with ABBAC pattern.\\ Tepet: 5 letters, cvcvc. 3 Symbols, with ABA pattern.\\ Mnemon: 6 letters, ccvcvc. 3 or 4 Symbols (the first is arguable).\\ Sesus: 5 letters, cvcvc. 3 Symbols, with ABB pattern.\\ Iseli: 5 letters, vcvcv. 4 Symbols, with ABCA pattern.\\ Ledaal: 6 letters, cvcvvc. 4 Symbols.\\ Peleps: 5 letters, cvcvcc. 4 Symbols, with ABAC pattern\\ Dragon blooded: 13 letters, ccvcvc ccvvcvc. 3 Symbols, space, 5 Symbols, with an ABCDD pattern.\\ Abyssal: 6 letters, vcvccvc. 5 or 6 Symbols- I think I see an ABCDED pattern.\\ Lunar: 5 letters, cvcvc. (Possibly Lunars, 6 letters). 4 Symbols.\\ Sidereal: 8 letters, cvcvcvvc. 5 Symbols.

Second Step - a few notes

First, I think most of the language is in couplets of consonent-vowels, but that individual consonenants and vowels exist.

Second, I think the couplets are order-indifferent for the vowel sound- the symbol for TE is the same as ET.

Third, I think that it is a phonetic, not written, substitution- thus SY-n-IS.

Fourth, I think, but am far less sure, that there isn't a seperate symbol for each consonent-vowel pair, but rather a generic 'vowelized' consonent.

Third Step - Describe symbols, find patterns

Not right now, I'm tired :) More latter!

Comments

Note, there is stuff on this in another thing where someone did ALL of the symbosl translation. The end result is there are no consonant symbosl, but indeed vowels. Its all in the Languages part of the website.

Well, after reading the Exalted Players Guide, I'm both amused and disappointed. The script on the left sidebar is the title of the book, for example Exalted Players Guide, and on the right side, it reads Chapter <insert number>. -- Ascendance
