Icefire Snapdragon

by MelWong

"Ahh, my favorite blend of tea. Thank you, dear."
- Icefire Augrim, harried merchant and loving father.
"Plain as a mouse and with all the fashion sense of a wren, she'll never compare to me, and she knows it."
- Icefire Jasmine, catty older sister.

Icefire Snapdragon is the younger daughter of wealthy Guild merchant Icefire Augrim, born of his second wife, Mellena. Mousy and habitually quiet, Snapdragon is nigh-constantly overlooked and very often overshadowed by her flamboyant older sister, Jasmine. Most of her wardrobe is well-made but seems at least one or two seasons out of date, and her robes and dresses tend to cover more skin than an Immaculate's robes would. Her quiet demeanor and dowdy dress sense have led to many dismissing her as hopelessly shy and easily-bullied.

She has few friends and no suitors. Her reclusive habits and shy, quiet exterior hinder her in most social circles, as someone who insists on curling up in a windowseat with a good book is unlikely to be re-invited to a rousing party.

Just nineteen years old this coming Ascending Water, Snapdragon graduated from the School of Philosophy two years ago. Her instructors lauded her good nature and willingness to learn. Her final thesis was written about the First Age play Yseran's Regret, and treated at length on the history of of old Hollow and the events described therein. Its excellence and the sheer erudition displayed within ensured that the Inkstick Circle selected it for best-written thesis of the academic year. She declined to attend the award ceremony, however, and donated the cash prize to several poorhouses scattered across Firewander and Nighthammer, to which she makes regular endowments.

Since then she taken on the duties of serving as her father's secretary. She schedules his social calendar, does the easier or more trivial accounts, brews him his tea, and takes dictation. In that function she is able and very unobtrusive. Most guests who are escorted to Icefire Augrim's study often take her as a well-paid scribe or an able under-clerk, not a Bastion socialite by birthright and inheritance.

Rumours

  • It is heard in gossip that she's actually the one of the two Icefire girls to fear; that while she seems harmless she'll call a contract out on anyone who so much as looks at her the wrong way.
  • The Icefire's washerwoman claims that Snapdragon is actually hideously jealous of her pretty older sister, Jasmine, and is slowly altering her father's will and deeds so that once he dies from her slow-acting poisons in his tea, the properties will be hers.

Secret

  • Snapdragon actually did not write all of her final thesis; she paid Delos Ferrano to help complete it on a deadline after one of Jasmine's tantrums left the original manuscript scorched and half-consumed by flame. She is terrified of anyone finding out the truth, most of all her father.
