Cobblepaint Avenue

by Moxiane

"Oh wow ... the colours ... sooo pretty ... they move ...."
- Than'ogip, drug addict
"Wasters. The lot of them. Bloody wasters. Oughta run them out of our street."
- Steelmount Ema, disgruntled resident

The road now known as Cobblepaint Avenue has had many names; in fact, it's infamous for it. This most recent name change occured as a result of an incident three years ago during the Hurricane Rebellion. A large cartload of pots of paint, destined for the Orinas Colors Adacemy, was overturned by one group of rioters, spilling the paint all over both the insurrectionists and the road.

This would have been a minor incident were it not for the cloudburst that occurred soon after. The storm in question had drifted too close to the Wyld zone in Firewander and the rain carried some of the potential for change into the very cobbles of the street. The multi-coloured paint became part of the cobblestones themselves, resisting all attempts at cleaning or scrubbing; and worse, the patterns of paint in the cobbles changed.

At first this was something of a tourist attraction - people came from all over Nexus to see the shifting colours of what had been known as Four Trees Street (somewhat nonsensically, because there were never any trees along it). This, too, would have faded in time had not the local drug addicts, particularly the ones who imbibed hallucinogenic substances, not gotten in on the act. The patterns seemed to affect their trips, making them longer and more intense.

In a typically Nexian style, the locals, originally angry at these wastrels, adapted to them, opening a couple of coffee shops (most famously The Broken Mirror), which sell a large variety of (supposedly non-addictive) narcotics, ranging from hashish to the seeds of the Blood Star-Lily.

Rumours

  • It is possible to divine the future by careful examination of the changing patterns in the cobblestones.
  • A very long time ago, Cobblepaint Avenue was called the Street of Hornets, which an old Nexus legend says was the site of a temple to forbidden gods.

Secret

  • One of the residents of Cobblepaint Avenue is a serial killer, and has been quietly killing the shopkeepers of Nexus for a decade, at an average rate of one a month.
