Sidereal foresight can be quite detailed in the short term, but even in the long term the Chosen of the Maidens are able to forestall disaster and avert danger through careful planning, aided by their astrological efforts. Through the use of this Charm, the Sidereal retroactively establishes some sort of contingency measure, which she may invoke for her benefit while the Charm has Essence committed to it.

The Sidereal temporarily gains one or more dots in a Background, up to a limit of the Sidereal's permanent Essence in dots. All Backgrounds acquired in this fashion are temporary, and Fate will irrevocably revoke the Sidereal's access to them when he ceases to commit Essence. All such Backgrounds must be approved by the Storyteller. The Sidereal cannot gain Backgrounds that do not represent some social, physical or materially magical asset. Allies, Followers, Artifact, and Manse are all acceptable Backgrounds, while Past Lives or Savant are inappropriate. The Sidereal must frequently make some sort of journey or other expenditure of effort to claim the asset in question ("I stashed a Noble Warstrider just in case of trouble...").

Alternately, the Sidereal's player may spend 4 motes of Essence per dot of Background, along with 2 experience points per dot, to make the acquired contingency permanent. Used in this fashion, the Charm's duration is Instant.

Use of this Charm can trigger a Celestial audit under some circumstances. Written approval for the use of this Charm, usually in the form of a carte blanch approval of some broad category of asset from senior members of the Bureau of Destiny, can forestall this problem.

You think they're saints? Hah! They're foxy beasts! They say, "We've got no rice, we've no wheat. We've got nothing!" But they have! They have everything! Dig under the floors! Or search the barns! You'll find plenty! Beans, salt, rice, sake! Look in the valleys, they've got hidden warehouses! They pose as saints but are full of lies! If they smell a battle, they hunt the defeated! They're nothing but stingy, greedy, blubbering, foxy, and mean! -- Kikuchiyo, Seven Samurai

The Larceny version of this Charm involves 'obtaining' the Background from some other source. The original owner (or whoever is being deprived of it) may very well come looking for the Sidereal, as Fate has been retroactively altered to supply a story about how the Sidereal took it away from him. Alternately, such things may be obtained from fallen warriors, deposed lords, and other sources, causing people around the Sidereal to assume he was somehow involved in their downfall. The Sidereal may not specify the story behind the acquisition of the asset, although the Storyteller may permit the player to make suggestions.

I like this one. Ad not just for the Xenogears ref. It makes sense for such a Charm to exist, therefore, it is good. (And gives me ideas for writing a Sidereal I can actually stand...) -Okensha

This might also work as a Larceny Charm; the idea being that you yoink the threads of destiny that tie whatever you're acquiring to the true owner. - Kurulham
