Kerning Stone, the

Song of Seven Willows, singer of tales untold, imparts:

The Kerning Stone is a chunk of glowing rock, approximately the size of seven fists. When examined closely, small golden sparks can be seen turning end-over-end, suspended eternally. This rock can contain 144 prisoners, and all but 13 "slots" have already been filled. Many of the prisoners were taken once the true purpose of the Great Library System was uncovered; most others were filled by some of the more troublesome (or learned) Solars during the Great Purge.

However, the stone does hold one more power. Knowledge lost is knowledge wasted; during Calibration, an Essence-wielder can place their hand on the stone, concentrating on the name of one of its prisoners, and the prisoner's face shall appear in the smooth surface of the stone. That person can be asked seven questions, and the prisoner is forced to answer honestly. The stone is sensitive to Essence by its very nature, and therefore only allows any given Essence-wielder to conjure up one prisoner per Calibration. Orian Glax, renowned seeker of secrets, attempted to call two prisoners in the same five-day period, and now resides within the stone, spinning for all eternity.

The stone is currently locked in a vault within the highest library of the Forbidding Manse of Ivy; it was last taken from the library during the Quest for the Final Shadow.
