Day Of Noon At Night

Excerpt from a letter written by Mnemon Garel, famed Wyld Hunt leader, to The Her Majesty, The Scarlet Empress, quoted by Paradise Cloud, scribe of the Immaculate Order:

Your Exaltant Highness,

[Ed: Three pages of official Imperial honorifics removed for conciseness.]

And so I come to a most urgent matter. A matter on which I humbly request permission to second an Imperial legion to act. During the course of my recent researches I have unearthed a horrific fact. It appears that the legacy of the Anathema lives on in certain areas of the Southeast!

But, I get ahead of myself... As all scribes are instructed in the Cloister, the orderly progression of ideas in our writing must reflect the Natural Order passed down by the Immaculate Dragons. I shall start at the beginning.

You have perhaps heard of the Day Of Noon At Night? If I may be so bold as to refresh your Highness' memory, it is a yearly celebration held in many parts of the Southeast whereupon the locals indulge in all manner of anarchic celebration. We in the Order had previously thought nothing of this festival. Provided the locals are respectful of our teachings, we have always allowed them to persist in their festivities. Following my recent discoveries, however, this state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue. I hereby request enough troops to supress the occassion throughout the region.

My discoveries began when I found that the festival is mentioned in an entry for The Bitter Flower Empire in Grey Bone's The Rise and Fall of Minor Empires. This festival is older than any of us previously thought and is, in fact, a celebration to mark the founding of an Anathema Kingdom! Further research has led me to believe that the rulers of this kingdom may have had dealings with Demons! The previously misunderstood entry in The Annals of the Falling Sun concerning the last known destination of the Anathema, Orchid in a Rain of Stones, last holder of the fabled Broken-Winged Crane, is now clear. He was said to be travelling to inspect the Festival of Penumbration. This is, in fact, the local version of The Day of Noon at Night in a village called Sabruskis, close to the ruins of the Citadel of Ebony Torrents.

As the one who so successfully wiped out the foul Ebon Prince Brotherhood, another legacy of the Anathema, I most earnestly request you permit me to serve you by also destroying all traces of The Day of Noon at Night.

Your Humble Sevant,

Mnemon Garel

[Ed: It should be noted that the requested resources were never provided to Mnemon Garel for one of two possible reasons. Firstly, he was found murdered, supposedly by a political rival, several days after this letter is dated, and, secondly, during the same week The Scarlet Empress ceased to be seen in public. I have attempted to verify Garel's facts from The Rise and Fall of Minor Empires but the necessary volume is missing from the Imperial Library.]
