Act 2, scene 4

(Hannuk Dur and Wang Fu enter stage left, looking haggard. Wang Fu is sniffing loudly, searching, still in human form.)

Wang Fu: I can't believe you missed him. After all the time we spent sitting there waiting!

Hannuk Dur: We would have caught him if you weren't so busy panting after that barmaid.

Wang Fu: Now is not the time to place blame, we can discuss who was lusting after who later. (He clears his throat loudly and continues to sniff the ground. Hannuk rolls his eyes.)

Hannuk Dur(impatiently): Well? What do you smell?

(Wang Fu looks up, his face serious for a moment.)

Wang Fu: Blood. And fear-- but mostly blood. Do you think..

Hannuk Dur: I'm not going to bother thinking until I know.

Wang Fu: Come on, let's hurry! The blood smells fresh.

Hannuk Dur(hurrying right): Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

(Exuent Omnes.)

Act 2, scene 5

(Cailus and Rosimund crouch on the stage, which is littered with still bodies. Cailus strokes Rosimund's hair gently, soothing her.)

Cailus: Shh, it's all right. I'm here now. I'll never leave you. Nothing will ever harm you again.

Rosimund: I was so scared. I thought-- And then-- (She looks up at Cailus.) You saved me.

Cailus: Yes.

Rosimund: You.. You stopped them all.

Cailus: And I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

(Rosimund looks around slowly, surveying the aftermath of Cailus' wrath.)

Rosimund: All of this.. for me?

Cailus: Does it frighten you?

Rosimund: Nothing you could ever do could frighten me.

Cailus: Not even this? (Cailus is washed with a golden spotlight from above. Rosimund touches his forehead gently.)

Rosimund: What does this mean?

Cailus: I am Chosen of the Unconquered Sun. I will raise armies and rule creation. Everything is clear to me now. It's as if I've been standing on a mountain in the dark, and now the sun has risen and shown me the world-- and the world is mine. (He brushes his fingertips gently over her cheek.) Or ours, if you'll still have me.

(Rosimund tackles Cailus, almost knocking him prone from his seated position.)

Rosimund: I knew it! I knew it I knew it I knew it! I knew my father was wrong when he said you'd never amount to anything. Imagine the look on his face when you have your own kingdom! I mean, if your god told you that you would rule Creation, I believe it.

Cailus: My dear, sweet, somewhat naive love-- there is a difference between having a patron and having a god. Now then, tell me of what befell you in our absence from each other.

(A faint spot stays trained on the couple as the rest of the lights fade. The Chorus appears, whispering loudly. A spotlight fades into view up center; the Bandit Leader is standing at the lip of the stage, peering off into the audience. The Chorus hovers upstage, just outside of the spotlight. When the Chorus speaks, it speaks as one; when not speaking, the whispers continue.)

Chorus: Do it.

Bandit Leader: N..now?

Chorus: We have given you everything. We are your gods.

Bandit Leader: I know.

Chorus: We ask but this one small token of your devotion.

Bandit Leader: This name is no longer mine.

Chorus: Give us. Speak it one last time.

(The Bandit Leader says something, but the whispers are too loud to hear.)

(Fade to black.)

Act 2, Scene 6

(Cailus and Rosimund are preparing to leave, gathering up her possessions and checking the bodies for anything useful. Rosimund spots the jade cudgel lying on the ground and quickly picks it up, putting it in her knapsack before Cailus sees it.)

Cailus: Have you gotten everything, my love?

Rosimund: Yes, I believe that's everything. I didn't have much, if you'll recall. They took me so quickly..

Cailus: Shhh, my delicate dove. No one will harm you ever again.

Rosimund: Believe me, I know.

(Hannuk Dur and Wang Fu hurriedly enter left.)

Wang Fu: Oh, good. It's only everyone else that's dead.

Cailus: Identify yourselves or die.

(The stage lights darken. A spot hits Hannuk Dur, who walks center for his monologue.)

Hannuk Dur: Oh, great. He's been a Solar for, what, a day, maybe two tops? If it didn't sound so much like Zael's paranoid demands in the First Age, I'd wonder how such an arrogant bastard survived as a mortal. I have to admit though, it's pretty anticlimactic that I've been waiting for this moment for centuries, and he doesn't have a clue who I am. Oh, well. He will soon enough. (Hannuk Dur walks back to his previous position; the normal lighting setup resumes.) I'm here to help you.

Cailus:(smugly) I don't need help.

(Hannuk Dur slaps Cailus across the face.)

Hannuk Dur: You told me you'd say that.

Rosimund: You're not going to let him hurt you! Show him the might of your glory!

(Cailus Raises an imperious hand to smite Hannuk Dur.)

Hannuk Dur: Zael Light-Bringer.

(Cailus stays his hand and looks at Hannuk Dur with curiousity.)

Cailus: How dare you speak his name! How do you even know it?

Hannuk Dur: He was a close friend in the First Age, and now you and I bear between us what little of him there is left.

Cailus: I have his memories; what do you have?

Hannuk Dur: A promise I swore to keep.

Cailus: What promise?

Hannuk Dur: To give his successor his inheritance when he was ready.

Rosimund: He's ready! What is it? His kingdom? Some great power?

Hannuk Dur: Hardly. He's a fledgling Chosen, still drunk on his power-- which must be tempered with wisdom and time.

Cailus: I must demand that you give me what is mine by right of birth, or I will slay you where you stand.

(Hannuk Dur merely laughs.)

(Blackout.)

Act 2, Scene 6

(Darkness When All Is Bright (Darkness) is decked out in soulsteel, flexing his hand, which is covered in a gauntlet.)

Darkness: So much power at my fingertips-- the might of the dead gods themselves is at my command.

(Mask of Winters enters left. The comedy mask is still on.)

Mask of Winters:Congratulations, my child. You are now a servant of Oblivion, a knight of death in my glorious army.

Darkness: Thank you, my liege. Already it has proved more than I dared to hope.

Mask of Winters: This is only the beginning, Darkness When All is Bright. There is so much more you may have; all I ask is that you follow me.

Darkness: There is but one thing in all this world that I desire, your eminence.

Mask of Winters: Tell me your wants, my son.

Darkness: Vengance on the glowing golden bastard who tried to end me.

(Mask of Winters laughs and puts his arm around Darkness, leading him off left.)

Mask of Winters: Soon, my son, soon. We must prepare you, and then you can strike when the moment is sweetest. You have much to learn.

Act 2, scene 7

(A bureaucrat sits in an opulent but messy office, writing hurriedly and occasionally flipping through one of the many tomes on his desk. He definitely looks overworked and underpaid. Lytek strides purposefully into the room.)

Lytek: Ren Li?

(Ren Li turns around so quickly that a good deal of his paperwork and books fly off his desk. He flushes with embarassment.)

Ren Li: Lytek! What an honor!

Lytek: You chosen are adorable. Where is your supervisor? (He looks around.) Or anyone else in your division?

Ren Li: Well.. ah.. you see, today is the day we have the morning off to train with our sifus. (He bends to pick up some of his paperwork.)

Lytek: So why are you--

(Ren Li bangs his head loudly on his desk as he rises, and drops all of his paper work once more. He cries out and grabs his head, sitting back in his chair, leaving the paperwork for the time being. He looks at Lytek.)

Lytek: Never mind. (Lytek strides over behind Ren Li, placing his hands on the bureaucrat's shoulders.) I need a great favor from a great Chosen, and fate has chosen you to be that-- er, Chosen.

Ren Li: Come again, sir?

Lytek: You're going to do something for me. Do it well, and you will be one of the most celebrated of your kind-- a beacon of glory among mere stars.

Ren Li: Well.. er.. I'm not.. I guess I could try..?

Lytek: You'll more than try, you'll succeed! (Lytek slaps Ren Li warmly on the back; he makes a face as if Lytek had tried to dislodge a stuck bit of fish from his windpipe.) It's a small thing, really. Do you know your history, Li?

Ren Li: I consider myself a bit of a scholar, actually. (He smiles with relief.)

Lytek: Good. (He begins walking towards the door, and turns back to Ren Li when he reaches it.) The Light-Bringer has returned.

Ren Li: WHAT?! But he-- but they-- But-- I have to tell my superiors. (He begins to look dizzy.)

Lytek: You'll do nothing of the sort. The kid is special. Keep an eye on his paperwork for me; try and lose it if you can. That's a good boy. Breathe. I'll check on you later. (Lytek exits.)

Ren Li: The Light-Bringer. (He folds his arms on his desk, and goes to put his head down. He bangs it once more.)

Ren Li: Ow.
