The Blessings Tree
The Fair Folk are well known for granting gifts of power and majesty to those that please them, and for inflicting madness and worse upon those who earn their displeasure. They are fickle with these gifts, and have been known to bless a foe in battle, or curse a dear ally, but normally seem reasonably constant with their favor. Additionally, many who first gain the gift of the Fae find themselves inexorably desiring more- from such people, the Ravaged are born, those who trade their souls piece by piece, for just one more sip of the Wyld's ambrosia. And some simply die.
Blessings of the Bordermarches
Cost: 5 motes Duration: Instant Type: Simple Minimum Essence: 1 Prereqs: Glamour (from the Core Rule Book)
Glamour comes naturally to the Fair Folk, letting them sculpt their dreams and fancies into an impossibile reality. However, this works ever so much better when the imaginary construct has some truth in Creation. And such Glamour can not normally enchant a human- a faery sword will kill them, but they may not be made weak or stong directly.
The Blessings of the Bordermarches changes that. The Charm requires the faery to touch the target (requiring a Dexterity+Brawl or Martial Arts in combat, with at least one net success). If successful, the target is treated as though they have been Power Questing in the Bordermarches for a week (See pages 208 and 209 of Exalted: The Lunars). They may adjust the difficulty up or down by their Permanent Essence (but not reduce it below 1).
This Charm may only be used on natives of Creation- it has no effect on Fair Folk, demons, or the dead.
Blessings of the Middlemarches
Cost: 7 motes Duration: Instant Type: Simple Minimum Essence: 2 Prereqs: Blessings of the Middlemarches
As Blessings of the Bordermarches, but treat the target as having been Questing in the Middlemarches for a day instead.
Blessings of the Outlands
Cost: 7 motes, 1 Willpower Duration: Instant Type: Simple Minimum Essence: 3 Prereqs: Blessings of the Middlemarches
As Blessings of the Bordermarches, but treat the target as having been Questing in the Deep Wyld for an hour instead.
Blessings of the Homeland
Cost: 10 motes, 1 Willpower Duration: Instant Type: Simple Minimum Essence: 4 Prereqs: Blessings of the Outlands
As Blessings of the Bordermarches, but treat the target as having been Questing in Pure Chaos for a turn instead.
The Oath Tree
Fealty Swearing Oath
Cost: 5 motes, 1 Willpower Duration: Permanent Type: Simple Minimum Essence: 1 Prereqs: None
It has been observed that, curiously, a strangely strict hierarchy exists among the Fair Folk. The Catraphacts have been known to throw away their own lives and existances in futile bids to save their Lords. And stories abound of the Courts of Faerie, where rule a King of Madness and a Queen of Chaos, with lessers all bound to them. The truth of these legends may never be known, but one thing is sure- a Fair Folk is capable of binding away some of their own innate possibility, limiting themselves to loyalty towards another.
Using a Fealty Witnessing Oath requires the Fae committ the motes and Willpower until the person they swear the oath to either dies or releases them of the Oath's obligation. Giving such an Oath also has certain advantages-
- They may attempt to communicate with their Lord mentally at any time. The Lord may deny such requests for a mental audience, however. The Lord may also communicate to their Vassal at any time, with or without permission.
- The Vassal may, with permission, draw on the Lord's power, borrowing Attribute and Ability dots. This costs 3 motes per dot loaned, can not excedde the Lord's own Attribute or Ability rating, and lasts for one scene.
- When the Vassal chanels a Virtue in allignment with the Oath, they gain automatic successes equal to the Virtue instead of rolling it.
The cost of breaking the Fealty is extreme, however. The Oathbreaker suffers a number of unsoakable Lethal Health Levels equal to their former master's Permanent Essence, and lose Permanent Willpower equal to their own Conviction. They also gain a Debility, chosen by their former Lord at the moment the Oath is broken, and ususally quite fiting the crime. No glamour may ever cover such an alteration.
Sealed by the Name
Cost: 10 motes, 1 Willpower Duration: Permanent Type: Simple Minimum Essence: 2 Prereqs: Fealty Swearing Oath
Fair Folk nobility are as mad as the rest of the Ethereal Host. They are alien and awesome, barely existant in the Wyld and terribly beatiful when restrained by Creation. But even so, they can diminish themselves of their endless posibility, swearing away some course of action on their own unique trait- their personal names. Such oaths are not lightly given or extracted, but neither are they unheard of. More extremely, however, these Oaths can be extended to willing others- all parties agreeing to the treaty in question.
This functions similiarly to the Eclipse Caste Ability, except those involved in the Oath gain a Deformity and a number of Debilities equal to the Fae's Permanent Essence, instead of botches. The penelty for breaking the Oath is decided when it is Sealed by the Name.
Vassals of a Fairy who has agreements Sealed by the Name are both instinctively aware of the oath, and become equally bound by it. Breaking an oath the Lord has Sealed by the Name is the same as breaking their own Fealty, with like consequences.
It is said by some that the Eclipse Caste extracted their immunity with such an oath from the Fair Folk all others of the Fae are sworn to- and that is why the oath endures even in the madness of the Wyld. Until the Fae are overthrown by something else from the Kingdom of Limitless Forms, the Eclipse Caste are sure of their safety, even when they can be sure of nothing else.
