This is just a simple effort to make the Heart's Blood background scale a bit more like other backgrounds and allow more of an effect with less investment. Also, I strived to provide more description than just numbers -- by giving an idea of what the numbers represent, it should be easier to determine about what level in this background any given character should have.
Hearts Blood
x You haven't hunted that widely, for whatever reason, and only have your Totem shape and perhaps one other animal. * You've only hunted a small selection of beasts, perhaps those related to your totem or a number of useful animals common near your hunting grounds. You have five animal shapes. ** You are an accomplished hunter, and have killed and claimed the shapes of animals from all over the region where you dwell. You probably have any regional variants of your totem, as well as any other shape that caught your eye, and have 12 forms total. *** You have devoted a fair amount of time to hunting beasts for a Lunar of your age, and have an extensive library of shapes to choose from including several beasts from outside your primary hunting grounds. You have 25 forms total. **** You have almost certainly gone on a hunting expedition with other Lunars at least once, seeking out rare and potent beasts and competing to gain their form. Hunting beasts is more than just a distraction for you, but a goal in and of itself. You have consumed the shapes of at least 40 animals. ***** You are one of the great Hunter's among Luna's Beloved, whose prowess is noted and respected. You've ranged across Creation itself, and have a selection of shapes that reflects your efforts. You have as large a library as you wish.
Other Notes
If you don't have a form listed, but it's one that you think your character would already have, you can ask your Storyteller if you can roll your Hearts Blood background to determine if you have it. If the Storyteller says yes, the roll is usually difficulty 1. If you've already defined all the shapes that your Heart's Blood background provides, raise the difficulty by 1. Character's without a Hearts Blood background can roll one die on this roll, but suffer from the previous difficulty penality (making it impossible for them to gain shapes unless they roll a 10 or utilize stunt dice for the roll itself.)
The Storyteller should generally say yes to this question if the shape is clearly related to shapes that the Lunar has access to already, or if the Shape is especially common in regions where the Lunar has spent a good deal of time off-screen. He should generally say no if the shape is especially difficult to hunt and kill, or if the shape would convey especially useful abilities to the Lunar.
