Martial Arts

I am planning to completely change the way the Martial Arts ability works. At the moment I feel it can be overpowered and I think that it detracts from the individuality of each exalt type by having a bunch of charms that anyone can learn. Changes I am planning are as follows:

  • All of the charms up to and including the form can be learned by anyone - even uber-skilled mortals (more on this when I get around to it)
  • Charms past the form will be individual for one exalt type. For example, Snake style is a Solar martial art, so anyone can learn the charms up to and including the form, only Solars can go beyond the form charm. If a Lunar or Dragon Blood were to be taught the moves of snake style beyond the form charm they could develop charms of their own to complete the style, but they would have to be Lunar or Dragon blood flavoured (if you see what I mean - Lunars using shapechange and bestial furiosity, DBs using elemental effects). All such charms are subject to ST approval.

How does this interact with Styles of unusual structures? At least one canon style exists with its Form at the end; I'm seriously considering styles that begin with their Forms. Several have a multiple-Form structure like Mapache's Monkey Style or my own Persimmon Ocean of Joy. I like the idea that Styles can branch into structures particular to one Exalt type, but the way that I would do this is to require at least one non-MA charm as a prereq to the beginning of the 'extended' branch, just to cement the particularity. (Yes, this means that sneaky Eclipses still get to be flexible buggers.) I don't understand the need some people have to assert, X is subject to ST approval" as though there were some things that the players can just do. (Yes, there are, but there is no such mechanical thing.) - FourWillowsWeeping

I find it safest to say subject to ST approval before anyone assumes things. Basically, what I'd try to do is have a series of introductory charms that anyone can learn and then have the branching trees for each Exalt type. All of this is just thought atm and I had another idea on Discussions/MartialArts that I might use instead... - CorlanDashiva
