The Abhorred Shears of Atropos
In the dim days of the Usurpation, a Circle of three Sidereals saw fit to go against the grain, allowing their Resplendant Destinies to be known to the mortals of the time, and using them to remove the power base of the Solars, by striking down the mortals who remained loyal to the corrupt godlings. As time passed, and the fires of the Usurpation began to die down, they found themselves charged with the task of governing hundreds of mortals.
Their story has come down in legend as the myth of Clothos, Lachesis and Atropos. Clothos, as a Chosen of Serenity, found her task to be forming the Fates that bring people to be born; put to Lachesis, Chosen of Secrets, was the task of measuring the thread of a person's life, plotting the ups and downs. Lastly, to Atropos, Chosen of Endings, it fell to cut the thread of life and send them on to their final rewards.
Eventually, the three grew weary in their duties, and they crafted Artifacts to grant to certain favored others, that they could rest while the Artifacts did their jobs. This ended badly, of course, with the Artifacts being abused and then lost. None know what became of them. Until now, at least, as the Abhorred Shears of Atropos return to the world.
Statistics of the Abhorred Shears of Atropos
The Aborred Shears of Atropos are a set of war shears, finely crafted and designed in such a cunning way that they will fit any arm, regardless of size. Crafted from Starmetal, the shears are a solid gray, inlaid with runners of blue and red jade, overlapped to produce a brilliant purple seam in the center of each blade.
When used in combat, the Shears possess the following statistics (which includes the Starmetal bonus):
- Damage:+5L, Accuracy:+2, Defense:+1, Speed:+2, Rate: 2
The Aborred Shears of Atropos are an Artifact *** item, and require the commitment of 6 motes to attune.
Powers of the Abhorred Shears of Atropos
- Moirae's Blessing - Cost: 3 motes, Duration: Instant
The Shears were designed to perform their task in cutting the threads of mortal lifelines, and this power grants that ability to the Sidereal. By snipping the shears just above the victim's head and expending his Essence, the Sidereal severs the mortal's connection to the Tapestry of Fate, killing him instantly. This effect works perfectly on Extras. Against heroic mortals and God Bloods, the Sidereal must succeed at an Essence roll, difficulty of the victim's Stamina. This power does not work against Exalts, the dead, undead, magical constructs, or God-Blooded with an Essence higher than the Sidereal's.
Using this power is considered a dice action, and counts against the Rate of actions performed with the Shears. A character cannot use the same action to activate this power and attack, since using this power requires snipping at something other than the victim himself; the Sidereal is still free to split his pool to do both, however.
- Sense the Impending Duty - Cost: 1 willpower, Duration: One Scene
The Shears, designed to be passed on to others who were not busy writing the eventual fates of mortals, were given the ability to sense those who Fate has commanded they be used against. With the expenditure of a Willpower point and a successful Perception + Occult roll, the Sidereal may sense those in a 50 yard radius who are Fated to die soon. The ST is free to decide exactly what determines "soon" in this instance.
