The Yeskanero Merchanting Family

by Moxiane

”One hundred bales of fine cotton, red. Gold filigree, twenty pounds. Twenty casks of peach schnapps. Two crates of glass beads, various colours. Three concubines, female.”
- part of the manifest of the Swooping Gull, a Yeskanero coaster
”Buy low. Sell high. Steal if you can get away clean.”
- business advice given by Yeskanero to his three children

Rich, powerful and beset by fewer than the normal number of scruples, the Yeskanero Merchanting Family is actually a trio of families started by the founder’s three children (two sons and a daughter, the eldest). Yeskanero himself died almost twenty years ago, having parlayed a single ship, an inheritance and some astounding business acumen into a shipping and trading company that was capable of dictating its own terms in several ports, and played a direct hand in the disgrace and eventual suicide of Doka the Unclean. On his death his three children were made joint owners of the company, and although its continued climb has not been as meteoric as it was in the early days, the Family’s assets have continued to grow. The recent marriage to an unExalted Cynis by Yeskanero Cloud, the youngest grandson, has merely cemented their position as one of the pre-eminent trading companies that remains fiercely independent of the Guild.

As well as using the main Nexus Docks, the Yeskaneros were granted permission by the Council of Entities three years ago to maintain a private dock adjacent to their main shipping compound on Stevedore Row, on one of the many small rivers that run through the city. The size of the bribe required for this concession was the talk of Nexus for almost a month after.

The Yeskanero Merchanting Family both exports and imports vast amounts of goods on a weekly basis, with everything from bales of silk bought in the Big Market and destined for the Chiaroscuro market to high-quality steel ingots purchased from Peleps Deknas’ Iron Foundry heading upriver to the eternally fractious Hundred Kingdoms on ships bearing the Yeskanero flag (a gold-and-green flag with the family mon emblazoned in crimson on it).

Rumours

  • The relationship between Yeskanero’s three children is somewhat closer than is normally the case for siblings, a propensity that has fed down into their respective families and is responsible for their close-knit nature.
  • Money wasn’t the only thing to change hands when the Council of Entities allowed the Family to build a private dock. Sometimes one of the Council needs to quietly leave the city, and this provided them with an easy way of getting out to perform these errands.

Secret

  • Yeskanero himself, although dead, continues to play a direct hand in running the company that bears his name. Strong-willed in life, he has become a powerful ghost, and uses his Arcanoi to help his family and hinder the competition. His children (Yeskanero River in particular) are beginning to resent his interference in their affairs.
