The Singing Disease

by Paladinltd

”No, I don’t think it’s funny! My old man died from it! Three days and three nights, singing about whores and booze. Just isn’t right.”
– Adson Tamari, thief extraordinaire
”I’m tired of these rhymes!
I do them all the time!
I think I shall not tell!
I really do not feel so well!”
- Acem Trell, explaining his condition

One of the more insidious, if morbidly humorous, diseases to ever crawl out of the Nexian sewers, the singing disease nearly brought the entirety of the city to its knees.

It starts out innocently enough: first the victim starts by humming a few notes without thinking. Next the person may break into iambic pentameter occasionally -- strange but not frequent enough to elicit notice. In a few days the victim is fully in the grips of the disease, and will spout out song instead of talking; only through sheer willpower is he able to resist. Within a week he cannot resist, and every word out of his mouth will be sung.

The singing disease first made its appearance on Drunken Wind Street, affecting the few mortals who live there. From there it spread throughout the Firewander district, up into Sentinel’s Hill and Nighthammer. Only until after the disease reached the Nexus district did the Council step in.

The Doctor quickly made a cure using tree-singer blood and spread it throughout the city. A few cases still remain, but with most of the city inoculated, they are ignored; and much of the city assumes the council regards these unfortunate few as a great source of humor.

Rumours

  • The disease is said to be the cause of Sorrow's Rhyme, despite the inoculation of the children.
  • The Tellnaught Quartet is said to have the disease, though their manager firmly denies it.

Secret

Eroica, goddess of a song which died out years ago and resident of Drunken Wind Street, started the disease, with the help of an old friend in the Bureau of Endings, in the hopes that it would jump-start her career.

Comments

Good god, why would a goddess of song be relegated to the sad fate of Drunken Wind Street? People sing all the time! Is she a goddess of some particularly unpopular or obscure type of song? -Okensha who just can't believe a deity of song would be among those who are gods of nothing

Thats what i was thinking. Sorry about that, I was tired last night and didn't have time to contemplate what I was writing. Clarifactation above - Paladinltd

This reminds me of a Lexicon entry -- Lexicon/AllColorFever. Funny how even relatively original ideas so frequently come up more than once.
