Golden Lion Guild

by Morpheus

"You shall come to see, my very young friend ... on the rise of a sun not unlike this ... and I will be gone ... and all who have sheltered you from this bleak world shall be dead, buried, and forgotten .... But smile. While there is light, there is hope .... And there is light behind your eyes."
-- Righteous Walks on Human Heads
"I don't like him. And I don't like her. Nor any of those three. I do not care for my neighbor, Ted, nor my comrade Joshua, here. But they have done me no wrong, yet. If they should, I would crush their tiny skulls beneath my paws in an alley like the one out back, in the name of the Unconquered Sun."
-- Walks on Evil Bleeding Skull

Many mercenary guilds make it in Nexus because they have an edge over the competition. The Golden Lion Guild, which can be found in the lower-east part of the Nexus district between Dagger Edge Lane and Pickpocket Row, just down the road from the stall of Indulgent Flame, is no different. They do what they can to make it from day to day, performing the dangerous-but-necessary functions expected of a group of hired arms. However, they have one trick up their sleeve. That trick is a lion made of spirit and True Gold, nearly twice the height of a man, and three times as angry. His name is Righteous Walks on Human Heads, or Lion Righteous Crusher of Evil Skulls, or Walks Righteous on Evil, or anything else he wants to be called, because he's a gigantic Celestial Lion.

The Golden Lion Guild prefers to take more advanced contracts, and ones that do not involve much sneaking about, so that they may make full use of Mr. Heads, who's a bit big for alleys, and a bit shiny for shadows. In a straight fight, there's not much to say. The Golden Lion Guild wins 10 times in 10. Many fools wonder why.

The Golden Lion Guild isn't really that expensive, for the types of services that they're able to provide. Righteous Walks on Human Heads is smarter than he looks, and takes care of problems very efficiently, and as discreetly as possible. One catch -- because there's always a catch. The Golden Lion Guild only accepts contracts for good causes. Of course, who can play God, and judge good and evil? Let's ask Mr. Heads.

Rumors

  • The Golden Lion Guild is really just an illusion created by the Golden Lion, an ancient Anathema from a time of long ago. He's safe in Nexus, where the council rents him to do their dirty work and protects him from the Realm assassins.
  • If you try to pretend to be on the up-and-up with the Golden Lion Guild, the Lion will catch you. He'll take you to his lair, and slowly crush your skull beneath his paws. And it hurts.

Secret

  • Righteous doesn't want to hurt anyone. He's a tired old lion, and while he could never fail to look proud, he's sick of his broken existence, the shattered world, and above all, the crap of the city. Set to guard an ancient religious site, he saw the fall of the Exalted and the deterioration of the world and could do nothing; at last, when the place he guarded fell into ruin, he left and became ronin. He commutes home every night with his eyes cast down, and waits for the day when the Unconquered Sun will look upon him again with pride. But here's the chances of that happening:
