It turned out the fickle lady understood the merits in brutality. She'd seen lions that tore up the young of their brothers; she'd been alive when the first and most brutal still danced free. Survival is fury, someone had told her, and she'd liked the sound of it. Not everyone was so happy about her choice; the no moons gave him his tattoos, and he went on his way right quick. He could feel his blood calling him to her. And when he got to Great Forks, he understood. Lots of people had said he was brutal because he wanted to be in control. But that wasn't it; he just loved the crunch of bone and the look eyes got when they went all wide. He found his love, and he ate a piece of her soul, and now he'll kill who she wants when she wants, and he'll enjoy it.

Hundred Passions Slave

There was a man born in the Varang city states once, and he wasn't one bit clever. He had his charts read at birth by a cut-rate state sponsored astrologer, but his fate was mundane enough that it didn't warrant much more - live poor, die lonely. A more talented astrologer would have noticed that this fate was not perhaps as fixed at it might have been. Sure, it was the general outline, but as Asif learned early on, sufficient brutality can change anyone's mind - and even the stars aren't immune. He was born big, and fast, and cruel; and he never was willing to lay down for someone else to roll over. So he beat his way through the charity schools of the south, and he did it with style - he was no gladiator, but he understood what the crowd feared and wanted. He smiled, and not a single one of his victims didn't look at that smile and thank the gods that they - among all the storied victims of the brute - were getting some mercy. But that smile, pretty though it was, dimples and all under eyes that could see right through you, didn't show any mercy; that smiled showed anticipation. It was the smile of a cat with a mouse, the smile of the taxman in a poor town - pure, innocent, childish malice.
Asif didn't know why that glimpse of hope that his victims got always made the ensuing violence sweeter, but it never failed him. He did find, after a while, that it got harder. People kept expecting more of him; you feed one man his nose, it's not enough. It just means that the next guy is someone who crosses you is one that's harder to scare. So you braid a man through a carriage wheel and ride it into the swamp, and all of a sudden that's not good enough either. Soon enough, he found that to make some money and make a killing, he needed to move up in the world. It turned out noblemen didn't take as well to being cowed - or at least, not by him. The first man he threatened hired his goons out from under him, and then all of a sudden all the men he'd trusted and tormented for years got their chance. They tortured him for a while, but they decided they were going to save his angel's face for last. That face that he'd used so often to take away their sons and daughters, the one that they smiled at as he slit their throats. It turned out Asif could take the pain, and, to be honest, damn few of his ex-men were entirely surprised when they brought the knife towards his face he started to shine - something like that, that's what the gods look out for.
