These simple yet potent artifacts were originally created during the First Age. Even in those halcyon days, it was occasionally neccessary for an Exalt to appear un-Exalted, and the Lunars lacked the appropriate power to simply draw a weapon from thin air like those chosen by the Sun (though they could, of course, fake it temporarily). In typical fashion, this was solved with magitech. These weapons were of particular use to Lunars who served their Solar spouses or commanders in less overt fashions, and so many of them were made (and thus buried with their owners).

In its more commonly-seen form, a Blade of the Clever Master resembles nothing so much as a normal weapon, of no greater than Exceptional quality. Despite the name, it may not be a sword at all; it could very easily be a quarterstaff, or an axe, or (almost) any other weapon imaginable. What makes these items Artifacts, however, is their less readily-apparent function: they may be attuned to, and when they do, they transform into the Artifact equivalent of their common form (made out of moonsilver, of course). A greatsword becomes a Grand Daiklave, an axe becomes a Grimcleaver, and so on. The weapon is attuned to for the normal cost of the Artifact that it becomes. No amount of scrutiny will reveal the secret of a Blade of the Clever Master; the protean nature of moonsilver means that the weapon has physically reshaped itself, rather than created an illusion.

A Blade of the Clever Master has an Artifact rating one dot higher than the Artifact that it transforms into.

Comments

This was originally going to be available in any of the 5MM, but I got to thinking that it was kind of silly to expect orichalcum or such to reshape itself. So it became exclusively moonsilver, and thus exclusively Lunar (more or less). Still not quite sure if it needs an additional cost (either in motes or WP or something) for balance; is the extra dot of Artifact required sufficient? -Azza

Yes. There's enough drawbacks already. Attunement takes a scene, after all, meaning that you can't whip this in a emergency and expect to get a magic sword, unless you have a charm that lets you attune to it immediately, and if you do, then you already invested enough. - TonyC
