Greater Sun Hawk (level 4 Familiar)

These majestic creatures hail from the deepest reaches of the Southern mountain ranges where they nest in the calderas of volcanos, using the gently flowing lava to keep their man-sized eggs warm. Though only the size of a condor when hatched, Greater Sun Hawks will grow to have a wingspan of up to 30 feet and be able to carry nearly 500 pounds in flight without stress. The sun hawks are remarkable for, among other things, the fact that they never cast a shadow. Most of their feathers and body parts are transparent and highly reflective, making them into walking (or flying) prisms. They also naturally channel Solar Essence through their bodies and glow brilliantly when roused to strong emotion.
Greater Sun Hawks are friendly beasts in most cases, easily approachable and pleased to be paid attention by humans, even children. The only real targets of their wrath and considerable power at killing are the large Southern lizards that are their prey. Aside from their dinosaur food, Sun Hawks have been known to occasionally attack villages but only if the villages have shown themselves a threat to the birds. Because of their friendly nature and vast strength, Sun Hawks are often used by Southern barbarian tribes as mounts, pack animals and protectors for the tribe. Greater Sun Hawks are rumored to be immortal, but actually live for only 1000 years.

Special Notes:

  • Flight - Being a giant bird, Greater Sun Hawks can fly at great speeds (150 miles per hour) and carry vast weights (up to 500 lbs) without strain. They enjoy carrying their friends around, it gives them something to do.
  • Sunflare - When emotionally charged, a Greater Sun Hawk allows some of its stored Solar Essence to flare out in a brilliant display of golden light. Such displays occur whenever the Hawk experiences a strong emotion and register at the same level as an 11-mote Solar Anima flare.
  • Sun Hawk Eggs - the eggs of a Greater Sun Hawk require the extreme heat of molten lava to incubate and hatch successfully. However, many people value the eggs far more if the never mature. If left without the proper temperatures to incubate, the eggs will cool and solidify into large white gemstones that gradually absorb Solar Essence if left in bright sunlight. For every full day of exposure to direct sunlight, the egg gathers in 1 mote of Essence. An egg can hold up to 5 motes if it was never exposed to lava but eggs that were exposed to lava long enough to grow to full size, but not long enough to hatch, are able to hold up to 10 motes. It should be noted that Sun Hawks only mate once every century and a female will typically lay only 2-4 eggs each mating. Thus, the eggs of this bird are very rare and the females are highly protective. An immature egg rates Artifact 1, but a mature egg rates Artifact 2. Attempting to harvest mature eggs from a Familiar is not recommended as it will greatly offend the mother.
