szilard's house rules

In running my Exalted game, there have been several places where I've needed to make some tweaks. I've tried to control myself. Really. I know that I am a compulsive rules tweaker. There ought to be support groups for people like me.

In any case, what follows are rules I've changed and some thoughts toward rules I might change.

Social Defenses

Exalted is a game that desperately needs some rules for social defenses (i.e., resisting persuasion and the like). Unfortunately, I don't have perfect rules. I've sort of played it by ear, depending upon the context. Here are some things I've done:

  • Set a base difficulty equal to an appropriate virtue of the target.
    • Appropriate when: trying to convince the target to do (or believe) something and they are not particularly suspicious or inclined against the prospect.
  • Allow an opposed roll equal to [appropriate social or mental attribute] + [appropriate virtue].
    • Appropriate when: trying to convince the target to do (or believe) something and they are particularly suspicious or inclined against the prospect.
  • Allow an opposed roll equal to (permanent or temporary) Willpower.
    • Appropriate when: no virtue is particularly applicable, but some resistance is merited.
  • Allow PCs to "ignore" a social success against them by spending a Willpower point and increasing their Limit.
    • Appropriate when: the conflict is relevant to the character's limit condition.

Lunar Shapeshifting

I've begun revising this at:Szilard/FavorsOfLuna. This is still a very much in-progress project.

Experience Awards

I haven't implemented this one; I am currently toying with the idea:

The base experience award is 4 xp/session.

Additional awards are based upon stunts. An additional amount of xp is awarded to every player equal to the highest stunt award on a single roll by any player that session.

I like just about everything you've said here, although your example under taking multiple Crafts seems a little confusing. Are you planning on writing up any Familiar-boosters for other Exalts? -- DigitalSentience

I haven't, yet - but I've given a good bit of thought to Solar charms to boost Familiars.
