Concept- Jak/ Quiet Shadow is a female Cat Burglar who is too good at her job- sought by the ruthless Obsidian Thieves Guild for stealing without a license, she decided to hide by changing her appearence to that of a young lad, a keen young recruit for the City Watch! So far, only the Lord of Silent Repose has penetrated her most convincing disguise. Her calling card as a Master Thief is to leave a small obsidian figurine of a mouse, giving her the name "The Black Mouse"
History- Many people in Gem (I keep wanting to spell it "Jem") know of the (in)famous thief named the Black Mouse. A few may have noticed that said thief has changed over the past few months, becoming less flamboyant and more secretive. What only a very few know is that the current Black Mouse is the second thief to bear that name.
The first Black Mouse was the swashbuckling Swift Shadow, steal-from-the-rich-and-sometimes-give-to-the-poor type thief, and Quiet Shadow's twin brother. Due to the circumstances of their birth, brother and sister had always shared a strange link, and when she woke from a nightmare 3 months ago, she knew that her brother was now dead, murdered by a man with no face.
Swift Shadow's letters home gave Quiet Shadow some clues, and she knows that the list of suspects includes the Despot, the Obsidian Thieves Guild, the Immaculate Order, and the Temple of Sseth. Travelling to Gem, she took over her brother's web of contacts and ressurrected the Black Mouse as a way of drawing her brother's killer out of hiding. As a deliberate stalking horse, she assumed the identity of "Jak": a guardsman who resembles her dead brother.
Jak was also a way of determining whether the City Watch was in any way responsible for her brother's death. After rummaging through the relevant files, Quiet Shadow is quite convinced that the City Watch could not have been involved in any way. She also thinks that the Lord of Silent Repose would have said something to her if her had been involved in any way.
As twins, Swift Shadow and Quiet Shadow were much alike, but in certain ways they differed greatly. Swift Shadow was never as agile or stealthy as Quiet Shadow, but made up for it with a flair for performance and manipulation that his sister lacks. Swift Shadow also had much more of a need to help people, especially the common people of Gem, whereas Quiet Shadow restricts her compassion mostly to people she knows.
Currently Quiet Shadow is at an impasse. Her investigations have so far stalled, and she's just discovered that most of her fellow watchmen are anathema, sorry, exalts. The only contacts of her brother's she has yet to try are his many lovers, whom she has avoided so far due to the obvious problems. She has almost reached the stage where it might be worth trusting her comrades with some of the truth.
