Description

Pearl of the Bottomless Sea is the left-hand sword of Qingu, a powerful fae who was "exalted," so to speak, by a half-formed primordial living deep within the Wyld known as the Sea of Chaos. After diving into her depths he emerged with this weapon at his side, as well as his other sword, Refraction of Limitless Waves, and the Armor of Glass Flames (both are listed artifacts). Thus armed, Qingu was charged to traverse the million miles of seemingly endless Wyld between the Sea of Chaos and the primordials' Creation, with orders to beseech the lonely Sea's primordial brothers and sisters to come back into the Wyld and lend her companionship and perhaps even the chance to start a new Creation.

Pearl of the Bottomless Sea appears to be made out of otherwordly white and pinkish pearl with veins of black coral. It is a curved, thin, elegant blade, about 3 feet long, with 2 curved serrations along its edge. Its sheath is made out of blue and black coral with runes and markings along its length that look like ocean waves. Its handle and handguard are also made out of blue and black coral twisted around each other and the handle is wrapped with an ornate blue cord.

System

Pearl of the Bottomless Sea has no hearthstone setting. It costs 5 motes to attune. It is relatively light and can be used as both a one-handed and two-handed sword.

Pearl of the Bottomless Sea has two magical effects:

1. When unsheathed, Pearl of the Bottomless Sea drowns out all sound in about 10 yards vicinity for one round and then gradually fades out. All sounds become muted as if heard from deep beneath the sea. In addition, listeners in the area hear whispers from the Sea of Chaos the sword is forged out of. Everyone in the vicinity must roll Willpower at diff. 2; if they fail they are frozen in place as they are inundated with the whispers of total uncertainty and endless possibility, and must make the same roll each turn until they succeed to escape paralysis. Unsheathing the sword counts as an action. It can only be unsheathed once per scene to activate this effect.
2. Pearl of the Bottomless Sea is an entropic sword; its chaotic energies seek to disassociate and unravel. Whenever Pearl of the Bottomless Sea strikes something with essence or connected to essence--an Exalt, or an Exalt's weapon or armor, for example--the sword does not make a metallic clashing noise, but rather a drowned-out "clonk" like a rock striking a clam underwater. When struck, the black coral substance along the blade swirls and coalesces into different patterns. Any such contact with a weapon or armor attuned or connected to essence dissipates one of the opponent's motes. Any damage dealt to a being with essence dissipates a number of motes equal to 2x the number of health levels of damage dealt.

For example, let's say Qingu and Allad are fighting each other. Allad attacks Qingu with his orichalcum scimitar first and Qingu parries successfully with Pearl. Allad sees one mote of essence swirl from the steel of his blade and dissipate in thin air. On his initiative, Qingu attacks Allad 4 times. Allad parries the first attack and loses a mote of essence. Allad dodges the second attack and nothing happens. Allad gets hit by the third attack but his orichalcum armor soaks all the damage, so he loses 1 mote of essence. Allad gets hit again by the fourth attack and takes 2 HL of damage, so he loses 4 motes. All in all Allad loses 7 motes of essence this turn.

Pearl cannot dissipate essence if it strikes mundane armor and weapons, only those attuned to the essence of an exalt or similarly powerful creature.

Pearl of the Bottomless Sea has the base stats listed above. In the hands of a fae properly attuned to Pearl, it has the following stats:

Spd 5; Acc 4; Dmg 5; Dfs 4.

It is highly unlikely that anyone but a fae can attune to the chaotic energies of the blade, as it comes from a completely alien being. Vast sorceries would probably be needed.
