The Principles Of The Magus

Root Principle

The Arrow Of Light

Cost: None, Restrictions: -1 Divinity, -1 Element, -1 Essence
Essence Required: 2
Prerequisites: None

The most basic idea of the Principle of the Magus is that magic can be cast quickly and easily. By charging a spell with additional Essence, the spellcaster shortens the gestures and incantations required to enact it. This reduces the force of the spell, but makes it easier to cast. The Speed of all Cast Sorcery actions related to the spell are reduced by 1.

Common Principles

Spellsword's Bounty

Cost: 4 motes, Restrictions: None
Essence Required: 3
Prerequisites: The Arrow Of Light

The character works her magical enactments into her other actions, allowing her to prepare spells while acting in other ways. The DV penalty of a single spell is reduced to -2, and all Cast Sorcery actions taken may be flurried with other actions. A character may not flurry multiple Shape Sorcery actions from a single spell with each other, although she may activate Spellsword's Bounty repeatedly to flurry multiple spells together.

Magister's Need

Cost: 2 motes, Restrictions: -1 Divinity
Essence Required: 3
Prerequisites: The Arrow Of Light

Sometimes, a spell must be cast instantly, without time for reflection. Using this Principle, a character inverts a spell's nature, unleashing its full force immediately, and then going through the laborious process of focusing the energies thus released. Using this Principle, a character may move a Shape Sorcery action to after a spell has been cast. For example, when casting a Topaz-Circle spell, the character will cast the spell on her second Shape Sorcery action, and then spend the third recovering. If the character is rendered unable to recover by being rendered immobile, she will take one aggravated level of unsoakable damage. If she is rendered unable to recover through dying, there is no further penalty.

The Bow Strung

Cost: 5 motes, Restrictions: None
Essence Required: 4
Prerequisites: Spellsword's Bounty

The cunning spellshaper is always prepared for danger. Using this Principle, a character prepares a spell for later casting. The character casts the spell as normal, but does not use its final Cast Sorcery action. She then commits the motes spent on the spell, plus those spent on The Bow Strung, and spends Willpower normally. She may then cast the spell at any time by using a single Cast Sorcery action. Because of the mote commitment required, few sorcerers prepare many spells through this Principle.

World's Pride

Cost: 5 motes, 1 Willpower Restrictions: -1 Element
Essence Required: 4
Prerequisites: Magister's Need

The character gathers the power of the world, substituting raw force of will for the normal excessive magical preparation required for a spell. She reduces the total number of Shape Sorcery actions required to cast a spell by 1, to a minimum of 1.

Rare Principles

Empty The Sheath

Cost: 5 motes per spell, 1 Willpower Restrictions: -1 Divinity, -1 Element, -1 Essence
Essence Required: 5
Prerequisites: The Bow Strung

The archmaster Typan was renowned for his incredible ability to cast spells at a rate far surpassing his allies. After extensive research, someone managed to duplicate his feat - only to wind up dead under mysterious circumstances. This Principle thus remains unique to Typan and his students - if anyone else has learned it, they are remaining quiet.

Unlike most Principles, the character may activate this one in conjunction with any number of spells, up to her Permanent Essence worth. The character may cast every spell simultaneously, rolling and paying seperately for each - every spell takes the Restrictions listed. All other Principles must be activated seperately for each spell, with the exception of Spellsword's Bounty - a single activation allows all spells in the Sheath to be flurried, counting as a single action and taking multiple action penalties in the same way.

The Perfected Arrow

Cost: 5 motes, Restrictions: -1 Divinity, -1 Element, -1 Essence
Essence Required: 5
Prerequisites: World's Pride

The archmaster Geron crafted this Principle to allow him to work spells with incredible speed, giving him a critical edge over his foes. Others have reverse-engineered the effect since then, although those who do tend to be very reluctant to share their knowledge. This Principle functions identically to the Arrow of Light, and may be stacked with the Arrow of Light.

The Invisible Arrow

Cost: 8 motes, 1 Willpower Restrictions: -2 Divinity, -2 Element, -2 Essence
Essence Required: 6
Prerequisites: The Perfected Arrow

To date, only Geron himself has been able to demonstrate this capability. Although he has claimed that he will teach it to anyone who can both learn the Perfected Arrow and attain archmastery, no one has come forth to take him up on his offer - openly. Geron has made certain statements suggesting that at least one of his fellows knows this Principle, but is hiding that knowledge.

This Principle may only supplement a Spell with a single Shape Sorcery action in it. The spell becomes a reflexive action; it can be cast outside of the caster's action, and does not have a speed. This Principle may also supplement.
