Bhumi, The Embodiment Of Duration
The Parable Of The Stone
Once there was a stone, that was pushed up out of the ground. It was strong and confident, and it thought to itself "No force will move me from this place, for it is good." And it rested, and considered, and was proud.
One day, a man came to the ground where the stone stood, and he gazed up at it with wonder. And he set his tent beneath the stone's shadow, for it would shelter him well, and guard him from one side. And in the morning he left, but the stone remained. It saw how it had helped him, and it was proud.
Others came to the site, for the stone was a good marker and shelter. Over time, a few small cottages were built around the stone, each using it as a bulwark. The stone looked down at the tiny group of huts that were drawing strength from its presence, and at the people living happily within, and it knew that this was because of its strength. And it was proud.
A great city grew up around the stone, and it became the cornerstone of a grand palace. Great kings laughed and roared and spoke with one another, and courtiers raced around the courtyards. Many paused to look at the great stone that was their inspiration and their heritage, and they were all suffused with a sense of its immense, unyielding might. And the stone looked at the busy people, and it was proud.
In the end, however, the kingdom fell to invaders, and its people were scattered. Houses collapsed into ruin, and even the great palace was reduced to nothing. Ultimately, the only thing left to mark the kingdom's place was a single stone, looking out over a barren plain. And travellers would look at that stone and remark on the impermanence of man, for who could hope to match that eternal rock? And the stone thought of itself, and it was proud.
