Mnemon Varik, Immaculate Huntmaster
Background
Mnemon Varik distinguished himself at a young age as a natural prodigy, a boy who was both quick of mind and strong of body, and whose parents, both unassuming Dynastic Dragon-Bloods, had high hopes for. His father, a legionnaire, hoped that Varik would follow in his footsteps, but he tended more towards his mother's occupation; a loremaster and scholar, she competed with his father for his affection after his Exaltation at the age of 12, and generally won. Varik became curious about thaumaturgy and the occult, and began secretly experimenting with it even before leaving for secondary school; it was assumed by then that he would be attending the Heptagram.
However, disaster struck at the age of 14, when Varik attempted a ritual that he had no right doing. The reaction created an acid that ate through the vial Varik was holding in moments, landing squarely on his chest. Teachers found the boy screaming in his room, a massive section of his body eaten away. Had he been mortal, he would have bled to death in under a minute, but his resilient constitution kept him alive long enough for a surgeon to look him over.
In the end, there wasn't much they could do. Varik's entire lower waist was ruined, and he had no control of anything below his gut. Desperate, his parents turned to a reclusive artificer, and called in all their debts; he agreed to construct replacements for Varik. The operation was a success, and Varik received a new clockwork torso, an eternal reminder of his failure. His skin still dotted from acid exposure, his lower body in his mind a ruin, Varik abandoned his aspirations for a life of atonement, attending the Cloister of Wisdom. His parents did not precisely approve, but they lacked the spirit to deny the battered boy anything.
Graduating from the Cloister, Varik continued his studies, but he gradually drifted back into old habits of study and learning. Although the things he learned and saw made him more determined than ever to protect the people of the Realm, he overcame his fear of sorcery and learned the Emerald Circle, supplimenting his martial arts skills with a tiny handful of spells, and joining the Wyld Hunt to help defend Creation from the Anathema that menace it. Now, Varik travels across Creation with his hunters, moving from base to base, trying to remind the Dynasty that there is danger in the world, and that someone must stand against it rather than losing their lives to futile quests for personal power. Although he is not a cruel man, he is wholly dedicated to his cause, and is unlikely to be swayed by the honeyed words of the Anathema.
