The Kind Man's Statue, Dream-Circle Spell

A powerful weapon used by the raksha Nine-Thought Orim, the Kind Man's Statue was designed to promote peace and understanding by the simple expedient of encouraging everyone in a town that was bothering Orim to spend their time at the statue instead of wandering around where he didn't want to trip over them. Mortals gradually came to pray more and more at the statue, which resembled Orim, believing the impulses it granted to be a god's benedictions. Orim benefited from the cult that this provided, until he one day grew bored and departed the region. The town sank into a morass of despair within weeks, and their town fell into ruin.

Effects

For the duration of the story that the statue is empowered, it has a hypnotic and strange effect on anyone who spends time in its presence. Roll the lorekeeper's Conviction + Medicine once each for Compassion and Temperance, and increase the target's Virtue by the number of successes (to a maximum of their Essence worth of increases to each Virtue - if the raksha has Conviction + Medicine at 7 or higher it is safe to assume that all mortals will be fully affected and have +1 Compassion and Temperance without rolling). This increase lasts for one scene after the target leaves the statue's presence. Furthermore, targets must succeed at a Willpower + Temperance roll at a difficulty of the lorekeeper's Essence or else become addicted to the statue's presence. Finally, both of these effects are seen as a natural and benign magic, rather than a dangerous and Wyld-tainted one.

All three effects are works of Glamour, and do not work on targets whose Wits + Essence is greater than the lorekeeper's Performance (for the benign nature), Medicine (for Virtue increases), or Cup (for the addictive qualities). Obviously, this generally means that this spell only functions well for raksha who are Cup-focused and trained in those two abilities (usefully enough, both Abilities are Entertainer-caste).
