Background
Khalor Farsus grew up in the great nation of An-Teng, the son of a Realm buerocrat assigned to the region. Growing up, he was spoon-fed stories of the glory of the Realm, which he ate up without question. As he grew, he proved himself to be intelligent, but prone to assumption; his parents did their best to shield him from the harsh realities of the world, preferring to see him grow up cozened and comfortable.
By the time he was an adult, Farsus was helping his father with the buerocracy, and organizing and funding various merchant expeditions, all the while convinced of the cultural superiority of the compassionate Realm. Even the slaves that his family owned were clear signs of his nation's greatness; well-treated, their lot was better than it would have been were they free.
All that changed when the new slave, Erinyes, began working there. His father had purchased her as an accounting aide, and she performed her work admirably, but whenever he saw her, Farsus couldn't shake the feeling that she was glaring at him. It was nothing that he could put his finger on, but he finally confronted her, in private, asking why she hated him.
"You and your people are stripping our land dry, and you won't even see it." He bristled at her words, and loftily told her that she was wrong; that the Realm was helping An-Teng, and protecting it. She challenged him, then. Go out into the city, in disguise. Hide his face and his nature, and watch what the Realm did. By all rights, he should have ignored her, but he was angry, and confused, and he took her up on her challenge.
That night, Erinyes took makeup, and clothes, and disguised him as one of the people of An-Teng, and he walked the streets. What he saw horrified him. The Dynasts acted as bullies, and took what they wanted without thought. Their slaves were abused, and their people treated worse than chattel. As his anger grew, he grew quieter, and hid himself further. He saw slavers stealing women off the street, and he knew that he had to act.
Following the slavers, he paused only long enough to cover his face further, slipping like a shadow into the compound where the slavers had gathered. He entered the slave pens like a wraith, and for the first time in his life, he felt anger and righteousness within him, burning like a fire, and he knew that his path was right. He freed the slaves, entered the slavers' rooms and stole their goods, gave them to the slaves to run with, and then destroyed the records the slavers would need to track them down again. As he was leaving, he saw that the torchlight was clinging to his skin, and he understood. old memories mixing with new.
He was Exalted. And An-Teng had a protector once more.
