Background

Black Lark's Song is an old man. He'll tell you that at the top of his lungs whenever he thinks someone is listening, but mostly because he likes to complain. As appearance goes, he doesn't look so old, maybe mid to late 40's, some salt and pepper around the edges and a paunch that he tries (half-heartedly) to work on. Chronologically, he is old, quite old actually, he's been kicking around Creation for a bit over 300 years. Now, 300 years is a long time, especially when you're one of the hunted children of the Unconquered Sun, people try to catch you, kill you, hang you outside on a post to prove a point... Lark isn't into all that. He's more of a recluse, preferring to spend his time researching majicks in his hidden lab/manse deep beneath the waves of the Western sea. He's comfortable there, his friends are there, most of his stuff is there, and he has a pretty water spirit wife who's happy with keeping the manse tidy and his socks where they belong. He realizes that every once in a while he has to interact with people, so he has homes and different identities in various places. He keeps his familiar, a crotchety old Great Cat named Zazu, with him while he travels, the duo have been together for most of Lark's years, and they seem to have adjusted to each others tempers and habits. Most recently he's been staying at his home in Nexus, and somehow found an apprentice willing to study from him, Maroshe Maryam. He doesn't particularly understand her, and secretly thinks she has some ulterior motive against him, but he's determined to play her game and beat her at it. Young upstarts, who can figure them. Maryam has her own issues, namely that she's infatuated with her instructor and jealously clings to any time he spends with her, even if it's just to verbally abuse her, and make her do dishes. Maryam is blinded by her <inexplicable> lust for the older man, too much to notice that he's not really teaching her anything "real", just going through the motions because he doesn't believe she has any potential for learning even the most basic of mortal majicks. He does, however, think she makes a mean beef pot pie, so he keeps her around. The sham relationship is working so far...but we'll see what happens.
