Several centuries ago, the Catgirl Ingrid von Hindenburg (known to her fellow Catgirls as 'Flopsie', as a result of which she NEVER used her Catgirl name...) strode out of the frozen wastes and into the pathetic huddling villages which ringed the White Sea, engaging in Ice Fishing, Ice Skating, Hockey, and Curling, when not being sacked by the Abominable Snowmen and other menaces. She united the local tribes and villages, forging together the Hindenburg League and teaching them the secrets of forging Lift Metal.

Inspired by her, they rose to become explorers of the skies and distant traders, exploiting the desire of everyone for ICE to cool their drinks in a world with little refrigeration. In addition, they sell art made from walrus tusks, blubber and oil from whales, tusks from mammoths, and special delicacies which only grow in the north, such as snowcones and popsicles.

While Cut'n'Shoot and the Scarlet Empire have superior artifact flying machines, the Hindenburg League leads the way in devices which can be made and operated by mortals, though it requires them to ply the Hawkmen of Hawkmountain with luxury goods to acquire precious Lift Metal.

The League is now trying to decide whether to ally with or defy The Boo of the North.

Living in the Far North

Much of the Far North is simply frozen over with ice and is difficult to live on even in summer, let alone winter. The more southern reaches of the Hindenburg League are less frozen, but still not very fertile. However, a left over project from the Harem Age renders some regions of the North much more liveable.

In the Green Zones, manses have been chained together into a self-maintaining system which promotes fertility and enables crops to grow under even the harshest of conditions. Inside a green zone, even ice can support crops, trees, flowers, fruit and other agricultural products. They must be carefully tended to keep them intact, and the manses tend to become targets for anything supernatural in the area that wants Essence.

Green Zones range from what are basically over-sized manses to the gigantic green zones which host the nine major city-states of the League. Those located in the southernmost regions of the League function as bases for the major tribes allied to the league and the manses proper often function as winter homes for such tribes.
