Sketchy background

As a baby, Keyes was discovered in a basket on the steps of Great Forks' Palace of Justice, a large temple shared by several gods of law enforcement. He was taken in and raised by the clerics who lived there (his "family name," Ward, is the common one given to orphans who become the wards of various groups). When he grew up, he became a functionary of Shioun the Paper Spider, the god in charge of criminal investigations. He served her with distinction for a number of years, bringing several notorious criminals to justice. Among his most notable exploits were exposing Ixin Ninefingers' forgery ring, and foiling a plot to stage a slave uprising on Calibration. He Exalted while pursuing the God-Blooded thief Chan the Nameless, whose paradoxical nickname was inspired by his extraordinary powers of stealth. Keyes refused to give up pursuit of the slippery half-spirit, sifting through the scant evidence over and over. His diligence drew the Unconquered Sun's eye; with his newfound powers of detection, Keyes soon achieved a breakthrough and was able to track down and apprehend Chan. His Exaltation is something of an open secret; most everyone at the Palace of Justice knows about it, but they (and he) take care not to advertise it.

Conscious of the growing tension between Sijan and Lookshy, Keyes' superiors have lent him out to the bureau of foreign affairs, which has tasked him with investigating Yukiko's disappearance and hopefully retrieving her. The government of Great Forks believes that a war between Sijan and Lookshy could destabilize the Scavenger Lands, opening the door to looming threats such as Deathlords and barbarians.

His Boss

Shioun the Paper Spider looks a lot like a wood spider, except made out of rice paper instead of wood. She has the appearance of being a piece of origami, folded from a single sheet of paper. Like a wood spider, she feeds on negative emotions, and has a strong instinctive urge to ensnare and devour lawbreakers and miscreants. However, she also takes advantage of her station as Great Forks' sheriff to subtly encourage the most promising criminals, ensuring that their exploits will inspire others to take up lives of crime (thus providing her with a steady food source). Many criminals who are sentenced to death by the lords of Great Forks are eaten by Shioun; she spins others into papier-mache cocoons, where they remain imprisoned forever.


Appearance

A moderately handsome man in his mid to late 20s, with dark slicked-back hair and inquisitive hazel eyes. Keyes is of average height, and somewhat lighter than average build. He habitually dresses in well-tailored but serviceable clothing, usually in dark colors. He wears his badge of office at all times: a white silk sash with a silver spider pin, worn diagonally across the chest. He usually wears black cotton gloves and a beret. When on official business, he may wear an unadorned sword and/or a light chain shirt under his jacket (or a buff jacket over it).

Personality

Keyes is affable and pleasant, and enjoys mingling (in part because it gives him an excuse to dress up, which he also enjoys). He is always trying to figure out people's motivations and how they relate to each other; this is something of a hobby for him. He is good-natured and accomodating, but has a strong sense of right and wrong, and is devoted to upholding the law. He holds himself to a high standard of honor, and expects others to do the same.

I don't, really. The main reason he ended up Night was that I could see it fitting either Caste, and thought the Night anima power fit the concept more than the Twilight one.
_Ikselam Plus there's, like two Twilights in the party already. But it's likely I'll waffle back and switch him to Twilight before we actually start playing.

I like him as a Night, myself. Then again, I tend to think that Night Castes make significantly better investigators than Twilights do. I have a Night Caste investigator myself ... (She has the same Virtue Flaw, too.)
