Exalted Power Volleyball

"No Charms?" you ask. "What's the fun in that? Isn't this supposed to be Exalted Beach Volleyball?" To which the flip response is, of course, "Well, DoA is a fighting game, and you don't see much fighting in DoA Beach Volleyball, now do you?"

However, have no fear! We can make up rules for Charm use in EBV. There are a couple avenues open to us:

  • Use existing Charms. Figure out which ones are applicable, and then decide their game effects. The drawback would be that we'd have to comb through all the books and make Charm-by-Charm decisions.
  • Make up new Charms. This is probably the simplest option, and would probably be the most balanced as well. For Sidereals, we could just introduce a new constellation governing Beach Volleyball. Or make it Martial Arts for them. Ability-based volleyball Charms should probably key from Athletics, since it's the Ability used in all volleyball rolls. Lunar Charms would probably be mostly Full or Changing Moon.

Comments/discussion

I would suggest a combination of the two. Make up two or three charms for each Exalt type, some based on existing charms, some wholly new, and let each player have one charm along with their one suit, or something like that. No need to go nuts and make it as complicated as Exalted combat; just a little something to regain the feel of charm usage and to distinguish characters a bit. I don't really like the idea of a Beach Volleyball martial art, because then everyone will learn it and have exactly the same charms. - NatalieD

My thought was that you'd be awarded xp for playing matches, which you could use to increase your stats or buy volleyball Charms (or, equivalently, adapt an existing Charm to volleyball use). You could limit the number of Charms based on league rank.

The idea that Charms should be a character's distinctive "special moves" is a pretty good one.\\ _Ikselam

If you're going with the fairly low-charm style of things, I would suggest that if people make combos (Which wouldn't happen too often if they were limited in charm number/availability) that they're only allowed to use a combo -once- during a game. Any combo. Just the one.\\
