The Redstone Theatre
by Jiba
- "Oh, my dearest love. May all the shining stars be washed away by the bloody revenge I will take on the murderer of our future. May you think of me when I am walking on the field of our former glory, cutting the crops of happiness long since passed and sacrificing them to the gods, laughing on us in clouded heavens. But we, my love, will remain."
- - Excerpt from "That Moment of Peace", by Sangurio Destheme
- "No, Naala, I am actually not able to provide you twenty elephants for the show. And don't say anything about artistic intention!"
- - Eibyeo Mwua, discussing with the dramatic advisor
The famous Redstone Theatre has had a great impact on art in Nexus. Constructed in RY 427 by the "Rubies", a group of popular actors who settled down in Nexus, it is a theatre with a fine tradition and quite a reputation. It is said that sometimes even the members of the Council of Entities enjoy some of the plays and concerts performed here.
The building itself, which is located on the northern end of the Peregrine Avenue, is indeed flamboyant. The red facade of the building, whose walls were built entirely from clinkers and redwood, is draped with flags and banners, showing the current repertoire in word and image. The theatre has three stories, but only the first and parts of the second are open for guests. The building contains three auditoriums complete with stalls and tiers, whose wooden walls are aesthetically decorated in beautiful geomantic patterns to ensure that everybody in the audience can clearly hear what is going on on stage. The biggest central auditorium, the so-called Red Parlor, is used to present popular and favored plays, while the other two, the Chopper and the Ruby Hall, are more likely to show modern or experimental performances.
The Redstone Theatre is governed by the conversant theatre manager Eibyeo Mwua, descendant of one of the founders of the theatre. He is a very canny but innovative man, who often emphasizes how much work he has to do, but takes his time to welcome every regular patron himself. Eibyeo knows how to make the most profit out of the repertoire, and without him, the Redstone Theatre would probably have closed in this time of tumult.
Another person of importance is Naala, an educated, charming woman who always has a thin film of salty water on her skin. Her hair hangs in blue waves from her shoulders and her eyes are as deep as the ocean. Naala is the dramatic advisor, and her creative mind is the source of many plays, shows or concerts. She constantly searches for new talents, who have been, as she says, "softly kissed by serenity." The discussions about the meaning of art and culture she often has with Eibyeo have become the stuff of argument about their relationship.
The current repertoire contains many classic or expermimental dramas by favored Nexian playwrights, above all the plays of Sangurio Destheme, whose new composition recently had its debut performance in the Red Parlor. Other performances that should be mentioned include: a classical Kabuki by Gomoro Hashi, from Calin; a galanty show by Tuekcow, an artist with babarian heritage; and the puppet shows by the famous puppeteer and puppet builder, Towering Maple.
Rumours
- The ghosts of the "Rubies" are regular patrons of the Redstone and never miss a performance. They have special seats on the tiers, which are not sold, so they can take them and watch the show.
- Some say the Redstone Theatre and the Player’s Menagerie have an old feud and try to ruin each other by any means necessary. The conflict between the two has something to do with the "Rubies," but no one is quite sure what happened to make the two theatres grim enemies.
Secret
- Naala is actually a survivor of the ancient dynastic House Manosque. Back then, she was known as Manosque Yafoe. She is the niece of Viridan, who tried to dispossess the Empress in RY 244, but she managed to reach the Scavenger Lands to save her own life. However, there could be Dragon-Blooded agents searching for her.

Props on "galanty", a word I didn't know! <busies herself determining etymology>

I looked it up in a dictionary; it is a show in which a certain kind o puppeteer uses figures cut from paper and a light to create shadows on a wall or something; maybe the right word is "shade play". Hope you know, what I mean... Jiba
- Yeah, I know. If I hadn't been able to find a definition on my own, I would have been all over you asking for it, trust me! I don't think it's a problem, certainly; anyone who doesn't know it will be edified by this comment thread.

Minor quibble, Realm naming convention would put the house name first... i.e. Manosque Yafoe - Malikai
