Boddel’s Eaterie
by Moxiane
- "If'n y'need decent food cheap, Boddel's is th'place t'go. Well, s'long as you're no a vegetarian..."
- Gibhen, Firewander street-person
- "No! No, no, no, no, no! The kidneys go into pies for the evening crowd, and the livers are a lunchtime favourite. You can throw the rest of his innards out to the pigs."
- Boddel, teaching the newest member of his kitchen staff
Amidst the squalor and decay of Firewander the restaurant known as Boddel’s Eaterie stands out as a place of culture and sophistication, at least by local standards. Run by Boddel, an expatriate of Icehome, the food and drink that is served here is good, cheap and plentiful and, while it doesn’t compare to the best restaurants of the Nexus district, it is noticeably better than some of the riverside dives in Cinnabar (The Sailor’s Breakfast being an infamous example). The establishment’s fare is not for vegetarians, instead providing good basic dishes with steaks, chops, pies and other such featuring heavily on the menu, but it provides nutrition on a budget and a meal at Boddel’s is often the only healthy food that a Firewanderer will eat all week.
Situated on the edge of Firewander, Boddel’s Eaterie draws its clientele both from the district’s own denizens, but also from the down-market areas of Sentinel’s Hill, bordering as it does on Night Wood Park. Boddel doesn’t discriminate, and his prices remain low regardless of where their money comes from, something that has ensured him a steady stream of loyal customers.
Rumours
- Boddel sits at the head of his own, strange thieves’ guild, recruiting people from the streets to steal food from other, better-quality, restaurants to keep his own shelves stocked with what he needs from day to day.
- Just over a year ago, a newly-arrived visitor to Nexus from the North stopped in at Boddel’s Eaterie for a meal. After one look at the proprietor, however, the newcomer turned pale and fled screaming, and wasn’t seen again.
Secret
- The meat served at the Eaterie is exclusively human, Boddel and his kitchen-staff being members of a cannibal cult that was outlawed and almost annihilated in Icehome. He fled south, taking his beliefs and practices with him, serving what wasn’t used during the cult’s despicable rites to his customers.
