Zane

Born in a small village to the east of Gem, Zane grew up with a relatively normal childhood. A boisterous lad, it was not surprising that when he turned 16 he desired to leave town and become a mercenary. His father sternly disapproved and after a falling out, Zane departed his home town and travelled the world, eventually winding up in the city of Nexus, where he found work with the Killer Bees mercenary company. His great size and strength earned him a rank of commanding officer in the unit. Eventually he fell in love with his Lieutenant, an attractive woman named White Iris. After she became with child, Zane decided to leave the Killer Bees with his wife and future daughter. He didn't want baby Jasmine to grow up exposed to either the dirty city of Nexus or the bloody career that her parents both followed. The company didn't take kindly to Zane's request for retirement, and Zane was forced to flee in the night like a thief aboard a ferry with only his wife and child.

Zane took his wife and daughter back to his home village, where his company could never find him and he could live the rest of his life in peace. Such was not to be. Soon as he arrived, he was hit with the dual bad news of his father's death and a terrible sandstorm that had uncovered a mysterious cave in the desert. The local hetman offered Zane and his family a job and lodgings if he took some men to investigate the cave, which had already claimed the lives of one search party. Zane took the offer.

The cave was deadly, of that there be no doubt. It claimed the lives of all but Zane as he searched it. Finally, in the deepest chambers of the earth, he find an orichalcum statue bearing a massive sword. And that's when he discovered he was glowing...

As he emerged from the cave and returned to his home, he found his daughter on the floor, bleeding. Then he saw the pool of blood coming from the bathroom. He found his wife in the tub, her wrists and throat slit. And then he blacked out.

Zane knows who murdered his wife, daughter, and village. It was the Killer Bees. He found and killed the assassins himself. He wants revenge. He wants blood. He wants to know why he wakes up screaming sometimes at night. He found his way to the circle, or rather Makaren found him, on his way to Nexus. In the First Age, Makaren had been Zane's strategist and lover. When, while out riding the circuit, Makaren saw him, they both knew each other for what they were and have been together, as friends, ever since. It was only natural that he join Makaren when she agreed to join Angelo's circle. For now, Zane is content to play the oafish country bumpkin, and to swing his sword where Angelo directs him to. However, the screaming voice in the back of his head lets him know that once he reaches Nexus, it's time to even up...
