Main Characters
Michaelis Maddock
- A sad, solitary, and somewhat disturbing Chosen of Endings
- Tanned skin, dark hair, and pensive dark eyes. Handsome. Withdrawn and quiet.
- Unpopular among Sidereals.
- Quirky sense of humor, finds pretty much everything funny, on some level, including his own problems.
- Obsessed with the end of the world and spends most of his time studying it and making contingency plans the rest of his division ignores. Michaelis is in love with Creation and is heartbroken by the thought that it might one day die.
- Weilds a pair of perfected kata bracers called Talisman and Charm, gifts from his sifu, Hound.
- The son of a pair of wealthy Nexus merchants who converted to the Shining Path and took their children to the Hidden Tabernacle before dying. Michaelis escaped, but his brother Urel was not so lucky. Michaelis thinks his brother is dead.
- Some guilt for abandoning his brother, but not much. Michaelis understands that he was powerless to help.
- Has a raven familiar named Chance, a flirtatious night goddess secretary named Noch, and a Chosen of Serenity girlfriend named Emerald Star.
Pontiff of Midnight's Wisdom
- Handsome, socially powerful Midnight caste Abyssal.
- Dark hair, pale, bluish skin, fine features, dark eyes.
- Primarily concerned with spreading the Shining Path among mortals of the North and East. Has no doubts as to the truth of his religion, but is doubtful about the sanity of his master, the Bishop of the Chalcedony Thurible.
- Friendly with the other deathknights.
- Some time ago, taken under the wing of Ten Thousand Virtues, whom he believes to be a deathknight, like himself.
- Believes his brother to have died in the wilderness beyond the Hidden Tabernacle and passed on to lethe before he could be saved. Feels some guilt over having been too new to his power to rescue his brother's ghost, but understands that there was little he could do.
- Travels with a pair of ghostly concubine/bodygaurds, Winter Harvest and Lightless Maiden.
