History

... OK, where can I start... right. I was born in this little town in the west about... 18 years ago or so. I don't remember much of my family... nobody in the town knew who my father was, and my mother left when I was 2 years old, for some reason... nobody in the town ever knew why, really. They all said that my mother had been a great woman and a great mother.

Still, she left me in the care of an old friend of hers... Old Man Yin. He told me that she looked really sad that night, when she left me. She also left behind... nearly everything she had. Nobody seems to be quite sure at what time she left, but everybody agrees she must have taken her ship with her.

... What do I think? I dunno. I'm not angry at her, and I'm not really sad. I don't even remember what she looked like. Old Man Yin was a great caretaker too, and the stuff she left behind let me live fairly comfortably. I wonder if she's out there somewhere... the villagers used to say that she was as adventure hungry as I am. Maybe she felt the sea calling out to her... who knows?

Anyway, Old Man Yin took good care of me, as I said. He taught me to write and read, about the ocean and the spirits in it, and the dangers it had... I suppose I could blame him for my sense of adventure, but it seems to be something in the blood, who knows?

Old Man Yin taught me other stuff too... fighting, especially. Rumors around town were that he was either a former pirate, marine, or martial arts master. I don't know, but I could believe any of it... the man could fight like a damn tiger.

When I was 8 or so, I snuck into my first ship. Actually, I went disguised as a boy... I'd been told about that taboo thing for female sailors, and I didn't feel like tattooing my face, I mean, come on. I was discovered on the ship soon enough (hell, it's what I wanted), and promptly set to work in the fine western tradition.

I learned a lot about sailing and repairing ships, but, mostly, I learned a lot about fighting. I'm pretty fond of big sharp things myself!

They actually believed I was a boy until I was 14 years old or so, when it became damned difficult to hide it. Oh, there was some trouble about this... but it didn't amount to anything in the end. Why? Because the captain and the proreus (who was also the master at arms) had become fond of me. Also, a few sailors (the ones that followed the Immaculate philosophy the most) said that my blue hair was a sign of good luck.

I could have -also- taken on near damn anybody on the boat in a straight fight, Sailing gives you muscle! But I never got that chance.

About once per year, the ship came back to my home town, and I dropped by to visit Old Man Yin. He always greeted me with a sandal to the face and then we got into a fight (where I always ended up with my ass kicked. As I said, the old man fought like a tiger!). A couple of days later, I left without saying goodbye and got back on the ship before it set sail.

The last year I saw him; he actually went to the port and saw the ship off. He never said anything, and I didn't say anything to him... it would have broken that tradition we had, you know? When I came back to the town (I was 16), I learned that he had died shortly after I left...

... yeah, I cried. Away from the eyes of the others, but I cried. I guess he knew he was going to die... he was old, after all. I guess that's why he came to see us off that day. He had even left an old sword for me, and some money, as my inheritance...

I haven't gone back home after that day. There is nothing left for me there. I wonder sometimes...

Exaltation

After Old Man Yin died, I didn't remain much longer with my crew, and said goodbye at the first port we stopped. I thought it was time to stop being on the move so much and actually take some time to know the islands... you know, become an adventurer. I still spent most of my time in the sea though.

During one of my trips, I traveled with this crew somewhere deep in the west. The trip was fairly quiet, but... we were suddenly attacked by nothing less than a Lintha ship! Now, we all knew the stories about the Lintha, and the sailors were pretty frightened... but, damn, those ships move damned fast. Before we could even get ready, they were right on us!

It was... a mess. Their pirates jumped on our ship and began killing left and right. Our captain fell under their own, and they were pulling us back, and... and then there was light and power.

It's... kind hazy. I barely remember striking down each of the pirates that got in my way with a single blow, while golden light flared around me. My sword, it felt so... right in my hands, and it seemed to have gotten much larger. I remember jumping towards their ship, and slashing down... and jumping back to my ship as their own got split neatly in the middle.

And as I struck down their captain, I heard a voice... and it was so very, very powerful. "Protect them!" It said. "Protect the people of this ship! Of this world! For ages I have turned my gaze away, but now I have returned, and you are my chosen!"

As the haze faded away, I finally realized what had happened. Dead pirates all over the ship, along with a few of my fellow sailors. Those that remained were watching me in pure awe. My forehead burned, but it felt so right... and I was glowing like a golden torch, right in the middle of the day. I knew what had happened to me, as I gazed at my reflextion in my blade, which had suddenly turned into a large golden daiklave... from the old stories I had heard I knew. I was now one of the Anathema. Funny, I didn't feel like a demon.

The sailors were somewhat frightened, but... as I spoke to them, down to the last one decided that I should be the new captain of their ship. I was glad they were willing to risk their lives in joining me, and I don't think I could ask for a finer crew. As for the dead... I realized my power to burn the bodies soon enough. We prepared the bodies of the fallen sailors and I burned them after a funeral. The pirates... there was talk of throwing them overboard, but I though there were enough hungry ghosts in the west anyway, so I burned them as well without much consideration.

So, we've been travelling around for a while, and our previously merchant ship is now an independent bodyguard ship for merchants... we've managed to elude the Wyld Hunt so far, thankfully. I later began wondering about the words I heard, and the stories about the Anathema...

I don't believe we are demons, but there is certainly power in our hands... misused, it's probably even nastier than those of the Dragon-blooded. So, I have made a promise to myself.

I will not kill, unless I absolutely have to. Killing is a waste, and it brings anguish upon those that the dead leave behind... how can we even pretend to show that we are not monsters unless we prove otherwise?

Personality

Rio is an upbeat, cheerful, and charismatic woman. She has a tendency of coming up as a bit rough, thanks to her years as a sailor, but she can be quite charming when she wants to be. While she'll deny this, Rio has a presence that just draws people to her. She's friendly and always up for lending an ear, and while she likes a good brawl, she's just as willing to talk it out. She is deeply compassionate, and cannot stand to see people suffer.

Rio takes her personal promise very, very seriously. She doesn't kill if she can help it at all, and might even save an enemy that is in immediate danger (other than -her-). This is odd, considering the power of her weapon and her strength, but she does her best to deal non-killing blows. Of course, undead and demons get no such consideration. A few people might stretch her patience, but she has yet to kill any... personally.

Finally, Rio appears to have a notorious weakness for women. She will hit on any that is vaguely cute (and gets lucky as often as she gets things tossed at her). She will also hit on women that don't quite fit on the idea of cute for many people (tough warrior women, for example).

Not that this weakness will prevent her from beating the hell out of one if the need arises... its just that she'd prefer to lay with them sooner than fight them.

Appearance

Rio is tall, powerful, and quite beautiful. Her hair is long and a deep blue in color and her eyes are wide and a vibrant blue as well. She's fairly vain (probably explaining why she has steadily refused to become a Tya despite all the trouble it would save her, since it would involve getting tattooed in the face) and likes to take good care of herself. She does not fear to dirty her hands and do hard work, however... quite the opposite.

Rio also favors blue and white loose clothes when not using any kind of armor. While in the sea, she prefers to go unarmored most of the time, wearing only whatever appropriate clothes for the climate she has. On land she's not quite as picky and will wear whatever armor she has at hand. Lately, she has begun to dress slightly more impressively. She will often wear a gold and blue cape when travelling the land, as well as a white headband tied around her head. She's a good deal more modest when relaxing.

Rio's armor is finely made and it's carved with images that appear to be waves. She keeps it in a fairly good state.

Finally, Rio usually keeps her sword on her back. Wherever she goes, you can bet she has a dagger close at hand (a sailor custom).

Past Life

Once, the Exalt that is now Rio was a powerful Solar admiral, known as the Stormbringer, and the only one that probably could even challenge his might in the seas was Leviathan himself. He was once a fearless leader, chasing after the followers of the primordials who still hid out in the seas. He faced the Lintha several times, and was always victorious.

Despite this, it is said that he hated death, and thus the only thing that surpassed his courage was his compassion. As a leader, he cared deeply for each and every one of his men, and was beloved by them as well. He would show compassion to those pirates that surrendered to him without a fight.

However, things began to change. Each and every danger he faced, each and every crewmember that died, became a personal affront to him. He would completely slaughter any pirate ship that took down any of his men. After a while, this came to the point where he would do it for a mere wound, or a scratch to one of his precious ships.

He was still brave, and he was still compassionate. He still loved each and every one of his men... and they were precisely that, his. Their lives belonged to him. To see scum hurt them was like breaking a valuable object of his.

He showed his mercy at the pirates by killing them quickly and painlessly, but poor those that wouldn't surrender. Eventually, although his men still loved him, they began to fear him as well.

And in the Usurpation, he was tricked. Separated from his fleet, using his marvelous flagship to take a relaxing trip, he was attacked. Oh, he fought bravely against those that betrayed him, but he still couldn't hate them even as he slayed them, for somewhere, very deep, the question if he had done something wrong aroused. And still, he died, but not before ordering his magnificent ship to sail into the horizon until he returned.

Anima Powers

Inherent Excellence: Golden Heart of Righteousness. The purest leaders of the Solar Exalted, the Resplendent Suns exemplify the power of a strong heart, even to the point of unconsciously reinforcing their efforts with Essence when the need is greatest. When a Zenith Caste Solar channels a Virtue, instead of receiving an additional number of dice equal to his Virtue, he receives additional automatic successes on the roll equal to his Virtue.

Supreme Power: Invincible Armor of Faith. The Pillars of the Sun have the strength to endure any opposition in the name of their cause. When suffering health levels of damage, a Zenith Caste Solar may spend 5 motes and roll his permanent Essence. Each success subtracts one health level from the damage he would take.

Divine Privilege: Anointed Priests of the Unconquered Sun. Each Zenith Caste Solar is a full-fledged priest of the Unconquered Sun, with the rights, powers and responsibilities pertaining thereunto. They intrinsically know all the rituals and sacraments of worship, and can call down the fire of the Sun to burn a dead body by spending 1 mote. They are aware of the proper addresses and prayers for all gods, and gain the full benefits of their priesthood whenever they seek divine guidance or assistance. Furthermore, they alone of the Solar Exalted are vouchsafed a personal experience of the Unconquered Sun upon their Exaltation, the better to spread the word of their divine benefactor.

The Heart of the Storm

Rio wields a powerful Daiklave, which she has named Heart of the Storm. The weapon has passed on its dormant state from mortal to mortal, only looking forward to its rightful owner. The last mortal to own the blade was Rio's caretaker, Yin, who put the sword to good use on his lifetime.

But now, it's back on the hands of a Solar, its rightful master.

The Heart of the Storm costs just as much as a normal Daiklave to attune, but it has plenty of nice tricks as well.

First of all, by spending 3 motes, the sword grows into the size of a Grand Daiklave for a number of turns equal to Rio's personal essence. However, the blade is more powerful than a normal Grand Daiklave! After the weapon has reverted (transformation back and forth is reflexive), it cannot take its giant form

When on its large size, the Heart of the Storm can cleave through any mundane object as if it wasn't there. It cannot be used against the living people, however. A character could choose to cut the armor a man is wearing, but in the end it will not hurt the victim himself... the sword will go right past through him without damage. This does not apply to plants.

Objects so affected will be neatly bisected. Objects that are very large or very solid require increasing difficulties in the Dex+Melee roll. Thus, cutting leather armor is difficulty 1, while cutting super heavy plate is difficulty 4. Cutting huge things (like, say, a ship) is difficulty 5.

While the blade cannot destroy the Magical Materials, however, it -is- possible to remove them from the enemies' arsenal. Cutting the normal straps in an armor and other such things. These actions are impossible without a stunt.

When the sword is not attuned, it looks like a normal, if old, greatsword. The owner may keep the blade in this state but still attuned at the cost of a single mote. When the time comes to take its Daiklave form, the owner spends and commits 6 motes, and the greatsword "breaks" to reveal the Daiklave underneath in a flash of golden light. When revealed, the weapon is -anything- but hard to see.

The sheath of the blade appears to be an old leather wrap when the sword is in its greatsword shape. However, when the blade takes the Daiklave shape, the sheath grows and bursts, revealing a beautifully made scabbard made of orihalcum and jade. When the Heart of the Storm is sheathed in this shape, it provides protection much like a Scabbard of the Living Weapon. That is, the user becomes immune to non-magical damage as long as the sword is sheathed.

This protection only works when the weapon is in its Daiklave form. The sheath offers no protection in greatsword form, and the sheath cannot hold the Grand Daiklave form. Also, if the user makes an offensive action that is -strictly- not in self defense using the blade, the sheath's power does not work for the rest of the Scene.

Rio's mother is quite alive and well.

Luvia Storm left her daughter behind not because she was looking for adventure... she left because, two years after having her daughter, she Exalted into a Sidereal, a chosen of Serenity nonetheless, and had to leave her life behind.

Now, however, Luvia is keeping her eye on her daughter. Imagine her surprise when she learned that Rio had become a Solar! This made Luvia a fairly firm follower of the Gold faction. She does her best to aid Rio... and send her to places where she believes she'll be needed. She's specialy careful to lead her away from the Wyld Hunt.

For her part, Rio has no idea of this fact.

Luvia has been a Sidereal for a number of years now, and thus has gained quite a bit of experience. While she has not mastered any Martial Arts, she's a pretty skilled Sorcerer.


Manse: 3

Rio has a Stone of Aquatic Prowess, a gem that lets her breathe water and survive swimming in near-freezing seas without harm, as well as swim at a maximun speed equal to her normal running speed. All fatigue and mobility penalties for armor are reduced by -1 while in the water. She can wear a light or medium armor and swim normally, and while she'll sink if she wears heavier armor, she can walk along the bottom of the body of water comfortably. She can fight normally in water and suffers no penalties when battling aquatic creatures.

Rio's Manse, The House of the Living Ocean, is a partially submerged building somewhere in the west that, at first sight, only looks like a small island overgrown with vegetation. She found it when her ship had to make an emergency stop to fix damage on the ship.

Resources: 4

Rio owns her own ship and lives fairly well off thanks to the fortune they have gained. Her ship is the Serpent, and it's a medium-sized merchant ship that is no longer used to only transport stuff. Most of these resources go to paying the crew and mantaining the ship, and thus she rarely carries too much money with her.

Part of the things she does carry with her are her armor and a dagger. She only tends to carry enough money to sleep and eat well for a couple of weeks in a city.

Followers: 4

Rio has 25 followers, all of them the crew of her ship. They usually remain with the ship when she's not with them, and they are fairly skilled sailors. The most important men in the ship are:

Underofficer: Sagacious West
The ship's underofficer often acts as the captain when Rio's not about, which tends to be fairly often. He is an old sea dog who feel sunconfortable being on land for too long. Rio deeply respects his knowledge of the sea, and has learned much from him.


Kubernetes: Crimson Albatross
The ship's kubernetes is a Tya, and an able sailor. She has held this position for long before Rio became the captain, and Rio saw no reason to remove her. She's somewhat stunned at the speed that Rio has learned more about sailing and even navigating, and this respects her quite a bit.


Proreus: Ferocious Tiger
The Proreus' name fits him well. He's a huge man, whose glare can cowe just about any sailor. He never speaks softly, and almost every word that comes out of his mouth is followed by a pointed curse. He is also the ship's Arms Master, and thus is rather skilled for a mortal. He tends to think Rio's too soft, but then again she -can- talk and impress her way out of most violence, and when that fails she can always chop ships in half, so all's good.


Purser: Seran Milkan
Seran is old man that is no longer in his prime, and thus isn't fit to do most of the harsh jobs the other sailors can do. However, his mind remains as sharp as ever, and he has an innate business sense, so he's in charge of the provisions of the ship. He also has a good deal of knowledge about spirits and how to appease them... not that many spirits try to bug them when Rio's onboard, but it helps to calm the rest of the crew.


Cook
What is the cook's name? That's a very good question. The only ones that know the answer are Seran and Sagacious West, and even Rio has to pause for a couple of seconds to remember his name. He doesn't mind, and he thinks about it as a big name. He's a pretty good cook as well, and he's a surprisingly skilled fighter with those knifes of his. Everybody just calls him 'cook'.


Carpenter: Old Man Hammer
The only man in the crew that can probably outscream Ferocious Tiger, Old Man Hammer's voice is the absolute command when the ship needs repair. He also knows a bit about fletching and even about sewing, but most of his time is spend repairing the ship. A fierce man in the surface, he's surprisingly kind. Rio also learned much from him, in the ship-building craft.


Surgeon: Nana
Nana is just the Surgeon's nickname, but nobody calls her by another name. She's an older woman with a steady hand and a gentle touch. Most of the crew would protect her to the death, and none dare dissobey her when it comes down to health. She has saved the lives of more than one man in this crew.


Master of the Tops: Soaring Gull
The topmen are flamboyant, and Soaring Gull is not the exception. He spends nearly all day up in the ropes, and he is a young and athletic man. He also has pretty sharp eyes, so he's usually in the lookout for trouble. He's also head over heels for Rio, which is unfortunate because Rio prefers women.

If it's used to aid on an attack to destroy an object, every mote adds 2 to the raw damage of the attack. Rio cannot burn born motes than she has points of permanent Willpower. This charm cannot cause direct damage to animate beings, although it can cause indirect damage.
