The Republic of Aries is a large and powerful nation of the Southern Scavenger Lands, one of the bulwarks of defense against the Horde and the Jungle Tribes. The Republic was originally the Aries Trade Association, a corporation of the Harem Age. During the fall of the Bishonen, the Magical Girl stockholders took over and converted it into the Aries Confederation, taking control of several prefectures and uniting them under the rule of the corporation. The fall of the Iron Millenium and the Chaos plague ravaged the region, but long-term disaster planning payed off, and the area remained intact, re-organizing into the Aries Republic, which has governed ever since.
The Republic is a league of ten cities and their hinterlands, with its capital at The Pentagon on the Green River. Each city is internally self-governing for the most part, and the citizens elect representatives to the central legislature, which elects a council of ten to rule the country. The council elects one of its number to serve as President for three year terms, which can be renewed; the legislature is itself elected every three years, after the Sacred Festival of Aries, which is actually more of a giant athletic competition combined with theatre competitions.
Magical Girls and mortals alike run the government; both can be citizens and run for office; Magical Girls just tend to be more successful at running for office... The current President is rather young, but her rise to power was meteoric; she is a soft-spoken Magical Girl, but has a knack for predicting the future and anticipating trouble, then dealing with it, often with the help of her strong right hand, a Magical Girl named Haruka.
The Aries Military is highly competent and noteworthy for its elite corps, the Sacred Band, entirely made up of paired lovers. They fight as heavy infantry and are quite deadly, especially as the supernaturals of the Republic usually end up in the Sacred Band.
Aries is, however, noted for one major problem; it is overrun with various variations on marajuana, some tainted by the Wyld; during the hottest part of the year, it becomes very dry and brushfires easily start; this results in the entire kingdom sometimes spending days or weeks utterly stoned out of their gourd. The locals take this as normal; outsiders are often rather discomfitted.
The Aries Republic was long independent, but over the last century was forced into tributary status to the Realm. With the vanishing of the Empress it has declared independence, but no one is sure if this will last...
