Only a few times has he asked her for something in return. After 20 years of Exalted scavenging and work, Voren has accumulated a small, very small, reserve of favors from the Goddess of the Lost. Artifact **** Starmetal Breastplate and Short Daiklave, the Hex Iron. Celestial Manse *** A considerable mansion in Yu-Shan, aspected to the Essence of Luna, it provides a Jewel of Rabbit Sword. Large and ornate, the mansion is used more as a storage facility and museum then a residence, with most of its rooms turned over to trinkets and items retrieved from expeditions. Connections ** Several minor gods in the Bureau of Heaven, especially the Division of the Lost know Voren and are happy to pass along information and gossip when he needs it. Familiar * Gag, a small red fox that once attempted to eat a small Artifact that Voren had uncovered. Gagging on the little object, the fox was saved by the Saturn-Caste and became his fast friend, bound to him with Essence as well as friendship. Manse *** A Scavenger Lord for most of his life, Voren has found and attuned to a decently sized Manse on the borders of the Chantan Republic. It provides him with a Windhands Gemstone. Called the Tower of Eyes, it was once a watch-tower on the edges of a Shogunate-era military area. Voren has set a Blood Ape as his custodian and bound a Hopping Puppeteer to work the Tower into an orrery for his personal use. Salary ** Though he does excellent work and qualifies for a higher salary, Voren has managed to accumulate enough fines and enemies to keep him at a permanently low payment scale. Being in the Gold Faction doesn’t help either. Savant *** Already a master Scavenger before his Exaltation, Voren now remembers many secrets of First Age Lore from his past lives and the intensive training of the Sidereals. Sifu ** An older Gold Faction of the Violet Bier of Sorrow offers training in the Earth Dragon, Violet Bier of Sorrows and Prismatic Arrangement of Creation Styles.
ARTIFACTS, MANSES, and IMPORTANT ITEMS Hex Iron, level 3 Starmetal Short Daiklave Forged in the First Age from Starmetal collected from one of the few Shadowlands that existed in that time, the Hex Iron is a dark blade and it’s powers are malevolent. None but the Chosen of Saturn have ever held the blade, all others find the resonances of death that emanate from the blade unsettling. The Hex Iron curses both living and unliving targets. Against living opponents, the Hex Iron inflicts terrible bad luck, reducing the opponent’s dice pools by 2 for the rest of the scene. Against inanimate targets, the Hex Iron inflicts double damage. This does not stack with any other Charm with similar effects. Hex Iron commits for 6 motes and holds a single Hearthstone.
Breastplate, level 1 Starmetal Artifact Preserved by the Gold Faction until Voren’s spark could be reborn, this Breastplate was forged in the First Age from the same meteoric iron that became the Hex Iron. This armor, however, lacks the baleful qualities of that malevolent weapon. One Hearthstone is set into the armor.
EQUIPMENT and OTHER GEAR A pet fox, sturdy clothing, excavation tools, magnifying glass, assorted bags and pouches. A hat. And pants.
DESCRIPTION A short, dark skinned man with shoulder-length brown hair and temple-locks dyed bright blue, Voren appears slightly eccentric, but unremarkable for the Scavenger Lands. His piecemeal clothing, mostly in shades of gray and blue, is sturdy and well-worn. A dull gray breastplate is always in evidence under his outer tunic, as is a wickedly serrated blade of reddish iron which emits a slight feeling of unease. The entire image of the wiry man is that of a marginally prosperous Scavenger Lord.
HISTORY Famous in his home village for getting 'bad feelings' about things, Voren and his family owe their lives to his ability. When a ragtag Scavenger brought a strange device back to the village, Voren managed to convince his family to visit an aunt in another village. They got the news less then a day after arriving. Their village had been destroyed when the Scavenger's artifact exploded, annihilating everything within several miles. Shortly after the destruction of his village home, Voren left his family to become a Scavenger. Spending the majority of his career in the southern portions of River Province, along the Grey and Sandy Rivers. He even visited Denandsor for a few hours before being driven off by the curse of the Empty City. Over 10 years of his life were spent scavenging. He joined other people’s parties, offering expertise in language and lore as well as protection. Many were grateful and accepted him easily, but a few he felt draw to watch had to be tricked or coerced into accepting him. He accumulated a significant stockpile of trinkets and talismans and several extremely dangerous First Age weapons, which he was unable to destroy safely. These he took to hiding in several small stashes scattered around southern River Province. Others, he managed to destroy without trouble. When he was thirty, he Exalted as one of the Reckoners, the Chosen of Saturn. The Gold Faction discovered him during one of his expeditions that uncovered a Solar tomb another Gold had been watching. Joining the Violet Bier of Sorrows and the Celestial Bureaucracy was obviously the expected thing, but it took several months for Voren to capitulate and only did so when assured that his calling was to be continued and he could keep doing what he did best: acting as a guardian of things not meant to be found. Voren destroys any find that has passed beyond its time. Many parties benefit from his aid, for he often helps recover 'safe' Artifacts in the belief that Saturn has not yet decreed their end so they must still have a purpose to be put to. For those who resist his efforts to destroy what can not be trusted in the hands of the people of this age...all things must end at some point. Spending years in Yu-Shan as part of the Celestial Bureaucracy has given Voren a healthy antipathy for corruption. He suffers audits with ill-temper and constant sullen glares. He passes out required bribes at the lowest possible levels he can and in general makes as much trouble for himself as possible without actually breaking any of the laws of Heaven. It isn’t just himself he makes trouble for, but also other gods. His duties in the Violet Bier of Sorrows sometimes get him involved in audits as a witness or his reports subpoenaed as evidence. Through deft wording and framing of the facts, Voren has managed to get several fines increased a goodly amount and earned a few enemies among the minor gods.
