Background
Comes from a village named Canzonet along the Yanaze River, famous for it's cabal of monks who were adept at fighting as well as the sagely works of song & prose, of which Sestina was an acolyte of. One day an ambitious thaumaturge named Madrigal summoned a demon he planned to enslave to become the greatest of all scholar-monks. However, the over-ambituous summoner failed his contest of wills with the powerful entity and was possessed. The demon proceeded to summon it's own lesser servants, who ran through Canzonet literally feasting on the voices of the musicians, devouring their power to write & sing as a sacrifice to the almighty Yozis. Sestina was one of the young monks in training who tried in vain to stop the demonic hordes, but she was just as powerless as her masters.
As she felt her last scream ebb away into the endless void, it was strangely replaced with another inner one, speaking of righteous punishment. It suffused her entire being, driving her to counterattack the demon-spawn like a warrior possessed, smiting them with fists trailing pure holy fire. By the time she could catch her breath, she was the lone figure standing amidst a graveyard of fallen dark ones, burning them with the faintest touch of the baleful bonfire that she stood within. The errant thaumaturge Madrigal was slain in the conflict as well, though the arch-demon master of the attack had unfortunately escaped her wrath.
The sage-monks were saved from death at least, but still a pall hung over the town, cursed to everlasting silence. Despite her newfound gifts, Sestina was also afflicted... but she did not waver, vowing to destroy the demon that did this and remove the foul magic. The scholars also seemed to know about her transformation, showing her Realm-banned books of the old masters of the world who fought the darkness.. the Solar Exalted. The grateful members of the order also presented her with the town's sacred treasures, orichalcum relics that they spoke of once being wielded by the legendary founder of Cazonet, long ago in the First Age, and which protected the land from the Great Contagion that once ravaged the River Provinces.
Thus armed with the tools of righteousness, she leaves for the city of Nexus to the west, to hunt for clues. Surely in this den of villiany lies those who would consort with demons for selfish power...
