Wizardry Background

It's hard being a sorcerer or necromancer in Creation today. You have to learn Charms, then Spells... a very big hassle. That's why there's the Sorcery and Necromancy backgrounds... to make those spells cheaper, quicker, and more attainable. But... why do they have to be so sparsed out and annoying? Can't there just be one Background that encompasses the general theme of being a sorcerer or necromancer in Creation (or the Underworld, or Yu-Shan for that matter)? There can now! Introducing, Wizardry! This background will fulfill every would-be potent spellcaster's needs at character creation. It can be modified to the Storyteller's needs, but it provides from the get go different values for each kind of learning! After all, Lookshy and the Heptagram don't have the same views, and being a Sidereal opens up too many doors for it to be comparable to an only recently Exalted Solar!

Each table represents a different look on Wizardry (the all-encompassing term for Sorcery and Necromancy) and is tailored to fit each type of Exalt and also where they learn! The Wizardry Background will not provide any Spells of the third Circles, even for those types of character that can attain them... Third Circle Spells are too powerful to make them available at character creation (though for high powered games, this shouldn't really be a problem). Wizardry also presents a progressive system. It's highly unlikely (and illogical) that a Sorcerer possess only Celestial Spells... one must know of the First Circle to move on to the next! Additionally, Wizardry will provide a list of spells that are common enough to be known by such powerful wizards early on in the game... some Spells, even those of the Terrestrial level, should be obscure and dangerous, and gained through hard trials in-game.

Below are presented the different Wizardry variants. Each one dependant on what type of Exalt and what organization they learn their skills from. Having a tutor is much better than learning on your own, and this is reflected in the background itself. Please have patience, this page is under construction!

Spells in the following table are disgnated as First and Second Circle Spells. First is Terrestrial or Shadowland, Second is Celestial or Labyrinth. Abyssals may only take the Wizardry Background for Necromancy purposes, and the rest may not learn Necromancy. If ther Storyteller permits it, this Background can be used for Necromancy by non-Abyssal Celestials, or Sorcery by Abyssals, but is restricted to one First Circle Spell per level. Players may opt to switch a Second Circle Spell for a First Circle Spell, but not the other way around.
