Backstory
"Thorvald One Eye was one of the finest warriors I have ever seen. And you can be sure that in my lifetime I have seen quite a few. He was a fine lad...or so he seemed." -Volstung Shirt of Scars
"I never trusted him. Long have I known he was Anathema but no one believed me." -Thiazi Widow Maker
"Thorvald saved my life many times and I his. You cannot hide a deceitful heart from one who has fought and killed with you. Whatever happened to him, I know nothing of, but I do know this: The Thorvald I knew was no Anathema. He was not evil." -Hafgan Howl of Fear
"Hafgan speaks true. The creature that returned from the lands of the Fir'Bolg was NOT Thorvald but a fae sorcerer in his guise. How else to explain his strange behavior and quiet secretive manner when he came back? The Thorvlad we knew died along the others! Let us not let the minions of the Anathema soil his memory!!!" -Angtir Sword Lover
"I do know that since his return from the lands of the Fir'Bolg, he was changed. It is convenient that he alone survived the journey is it not? Certainly it is possible our Fir'Bolg 'allies' possessed or bewitched him if NOTHING else. We should forget him and look to the threat that created him in the north. Surely our ancestors did not die so that we can ignore our ancient enemy!!" -Thrudnir Shield Sunderer
"Wether possessed or turned or evil from the start, all that matters now is that he is our enemy. This talk is useless!" -Thorolf Impaled Three Times
"Not useless! If we know how this happened we can guard from it happening ever again. Without knowing how our enemies will attack, all vigilance is in vain." -Skyrmir Laughs at Death
"We know where all evil comes from. The North. All evil springs there." -Morn Death's Favored Son
"Whatever happened, nothing has changed. We live. We fight. There is nothing else." -Thrend Atop the Piled Dead
Ragnak Frozen Tongue speaks at the campfire:
"So it is we are gathered here in the bitter cold! So it is we stand firm weapons ready and in wait! So it is we steel ourselves once more to face the enemy!! So it is we uphold our ancient and terrible oath!!
"You few who sit around this fire are the soul and the strength of our people! You few who sit around this fire are the pride of the frozen wastes, your blood and your fury the only warmth within bodies carved of rock and ice. This is your purpose in this bleak world men of fallen Gower! This is your lot in life: War with our ancient enemy for no other reason than it is there.
"Of the 12 who I see before me, only two will live to see the light of the sun. Two, if that many, will return with me to Stronghold and that is if fortune is WITH us. Those that die will live on in our memory. It is no simple task to stand before the Fallen Ones.
"So it is for those that will die tonight, that I tell this last tale. And it is for those who live to remember and honor their fallen brethren by heeding its lesson. To do otherwise is to spit in the face of your brethren and this last night you share together.
"You have all heard the tales of our people and their noble sacrifice! You have likewise been regaled with stories of our triumphs. But there is much more to our eternal war than you can begin to know. For though we have foes a plenty, the greatest of them all is one you do not know. This foes is the most grim and terrible of all, grimmer than all those you have faced be they Lhiannon, the Dead who Walk or even the dread Myrkridia. Fierce they be, they pale before the greatest of all our enemies, the enemy within.
I see some of you roll your eyes. You are fools!! Stone you say? Stone and fangs and claws are all that need be feared? Fools. Though our walking enemies be great, still do they hold a lesser power!! For the foe within our hearts, though quiet and familiar hides the sting of treachery. And no wound ever dealt has ever surpassed this poison!
Think of the tale of Morfran the Deceiver whose dealings with the unholy practice of death magic brought the Doom of a Thousand Eyes upon us!! It was no Fae or Beast Lord who conjured this!! Or of Gwynnoch Maat whose enchantment at the hands of the White Enchantress led him to reveal the location of the First Stronghold and were it not for Brave Cormac Morn and his Blood Widows we would have beeen destroyed.
And is there any need to speak of the deeds of the Great Betrayer?? I think not!!!
These traitors succeeded with lies and soft evils what the strongest fangs and sharpest blades could never hope to accomplish!! And in all these tales, it was one of our own who almost brought doom to our people.
Now imagine if the traitor was not a man, but the son of a god!!
This is the terrible tale that I will now tell you..."
The last words of Ragnak Frozen Tongue to his successor:
I wish I could say there was anything special about the boy, but there wasn't. Perhaps there was, but we never noticed it for they never matched our signs and portents. There are many ancient prophecies and lores now lost to us. Who knows? I cannot say. Only that Thorvald was just another boy, no different than the rest.
There were in fact SOME indications. The kind one is aware of after the sun has set, when looking back for answers on why it happened. Yes....looking back, Thorvald was exceptionally fierce and lucky in battle. But not overly so. He alone survived the Journey of Reforging, he alone out of the 20 that were sent to the north to the land of the Fir'Bolg. But again, at the time we thought nothing of it. Believe me when I tell you that Thorvald seemed...no...he WAS as Northron as you or I or any.
That he was Anathema is a blow to us all. Our people STILL have not recovered from this. Still they whisper about his many trysts, though all women who shared bed with him -and some who didn't I gather- were burned along with their children. STILL suspicion turns blood forged kinsmen into frightened and Sullen strangers, though all trace of his passing has been purged; his goods, his hearth not to mention the livestock that we destroyed out of fear that he may have had his way with them
One can never be too safe from the touch of the Anathema.
No. We are still wounder, even now years later, the village relocated, our numbers far dwindled yet pure and free of taint. Still the memory lies...of ONE OF THEIR KIND AMONG US.... A violation WORSE than any rape. For truly it was the ravaging of the very SPIRIT of our people.
All the times he laughed and lived among us, the food we shared, songs we sang, the blood we shed together...the memories,...good times, bad times, the battles.
Tainted...all tainted.
For it was shared with one of the Anathema.
But boy, as I lay dying here I see you have no grasp of the true abomination. That you do not see the TRUE horror. The worst part is what I, Ragnak, know that no other will accept. What I have SEEN that our people cannot bring themselves to believe...though at times I think they know...what I know....that despite it all though he was Anathema...he was still one of us. At the battle...I tell the tale that he fought against us...that he betrayed us. But it is a lie.
He fought for us.
He saved us.
A Chosen of the Unconquered Sun.
And he saved us.
The Gods have not abandoned us. I will NOT say it aloud. I will not utter it to my people, but I know inside my heart. The Gods have not abandoned us.
