Gargoyles are some of the more annoying beasts that many travelers encounter. Found nearly anywhere in Creation, gargoyles are supernaturally tough and imbued with some measure of elemental Earth. Able to shrug off blows that would fell a horse in one strike, gargoyles typically lair in small groups of two to as many as a dozen. Worse yet, they're nearly impossible to see before they strike and their stony wings can carry them aloft. Fast and tough, gargoyles are not especially brave and will flee, even taking to the air, if combat turns against them. Perhaps the one saving grace of dealing with gargoyles is that they are neither especially strong nor numerous; while difficult to slay, gargoyles do not breed often. Unfortunately, most gargoyles that are born survive to adulthood. Many Dynasts find them challenging sport... and more than one has found that the gargoyle he hunted was predator and not prey that night.

Physically, gargoyles resemble lean, muscular men of a little under two yards height with the twisted faces of demons, horns, digitgrade legs, spars at the elbows, great stony wings like those of a giant bat, and skin made of stone. Their skin typically matches the color of the dominant formations in the area or is a chalky gray. Skilled at staying perfectly still for long periods of time, many make the mistake of walking right past a gargoyle, convinced it is merely a particularly ugly statue. While not difficult for an experienced Exalt to fight off, gargoyles are a lethal menace to mortals and a dangerous foe to younger Exalts. Some of the more esoteric units of the Realm's army include fangs of trained gargoyles controlled and dominated by Terrestrial Charms.
