Murdoc

Description

Murdoc stands out in a crowd, not because of his appearance but because of his height; he's well over six feet. He wears loose clothing, gloves, and carries several bags crammed full of thaumaturgical tools and supplies. His unkempt sandy blonde hair reaches his shoulders and several days growth of stubble usually graces his chin. A set of reading glasses remains perched on his nose.

Those who see Murdoc unclothed (peeping Tom!) are privilaged to observe the only extant copy of Murdoc's theoretical crowning glory; the Human Thaumaturgical Extention Array, resembling a cross between a circuit diagram and a sorcerous circle that is tattooed all over his body, stopping only at his shoulders.

History

Murdoc was one of the finest thaumaturges in the East, with a long history of doing great works with his skill for those who would otherwise have had no access to a thaumaturge. His long wanderings earned him the nickname "Peregrine Thaumaturge." For Murdoc, this was not enough; he wanted to truly change the face of thaumaturgy, and indeed all magic-working. Over the course of a decade, Murdoc collected sorcorous lore; he became convinced that the only thing separating the Dragon-Blooded and mortals, as far as sorcery was concerned, was the ability to conduct and manipulate essence. He resolved to knock down this barrier. Nearly three years in the design stages and six painful months on the tattoo table later, Murdoc was ready to test his theory of Thaumaturgical Relativity. The ink used to create the Human Thaumaturgical Extension Array was suffused with ground green jade, chosen for its resonance with living essence. By moving along a massive thaumaturgical circle and moving his body in the proper way, Murdoc believed that he could conduct, manipulate, and focus essence into a sorcery, just as could any Dragon-Blood.

Wow, was he wrong.

Long story short, the experiment nearly killed Murdoc; however, as the essence feedback was tearing his body to shreds from the inside out, leeching the jade out of him molecule by molecule, he Exalted. The sorcery Murdoc was trying to cast immediately went off without a hitch.

Despite the success of the sorcery, Murdoc understood that it had not occured because of the experimental setup, but rather because he had been empowered to perform such feats by an outside force. He now feels that his experiment was a complete failure and is thoroughly embarrassed by it; he wears clothing that conceals the tattoo array to avoid being constantly reminded of it.
