Character Description
The first thing Markandeya did, he wrote Himself. The second thing Markandeya did, he wrote a Body. The third thing Markandeya did, he wrote his Servants. The fourth thing Markandeya did, he wrote a World.
In his World, he knew all things. He knew why the leaves fell in the fourth season of Fimbul, and why the Imperial Guard Captain Sureya was having an affair with his Lady Queen, the Dragon Filke.
He knew why the tide rose and fell. He knew why the King would decree that the color green was offensive to his sight.
He knew everything.
He enjoyed knowing everything for some time, tended by his servants and ignored by his World. His World was a fine story, and had many interesting plotlines. And yet, after a time that was both an instant and an eternity, it bored him. He knew, always, what would happen next, because he had mastered the mathematics of the World, and the web of relations that ran within it.
He knew the whys of the wars, and the whens of the treacheries. He knew everything. But when you know everything, what is there to do?
So he decided that he would begin to change things in his World. And every season, he would perform one act.
The fifth thing Markendeya did, he wrote a Behemoth, Madradhura.
The first season, he released the Hunting Dog of Seven Glories, Madradhura, to hunt and kill the greatest man in the World. Then he watched and saw the reactions. And he knew the whys, and the hows, but it was amusing.
The second season, he told the Hunting Dog of Seven Glories, Madradhura, to hunt and kill the least man in the World. Then he watched and saw the reactions. And he knew the whys, and the hows, but it was still amusing.
The third season, he told the Hunting Dog of Seven Glories, Madradhura, to hunt and kill the most beautiful woman in the World. Then he watched and saw the reactions. And he knew the whys, and the hows, but it was still amusing.
The fourth season, he told the Hunting Dog of Seven Glories, Madradhura, to hunt and kill the ugliest woman in the World. Then he watched and saw the reactions. And he knew the whys, and the hows, but it was not amusing any more.
The sixth thing Markendeya did, he wrote an Oath.
So he swore never to speak without acting, and in doing so, he learned the key to protect himself from the words of others, and to shut their mouths.
But this was not amusing enough.
The seventh thing Markendeya did, he wrote a tool, the Glorious Shaper's Song.
So he tore from the World a shard, and he shaped the shard into a Resonant Chorus Bow, naming it the Glorious Shaper's Song.
But this was not amusing enough.
Markendeya turned to his Servants, and he said, 'To know everything is to know nothing. There is nothing if one knows everything.'
And it was so.
Markendeya gathered his Servants, his Hunting Dog, his Oath and his Song. He abandoned the World, and it was as nothing, for he knew everything.
And he joined the other rakshas, in their Worlds, and their Courts. And he did not know everything. So he asked questions, to see what they knew, and how they knew it.
And he was amused.
