Astrology Changes

The following are some slight tweaks to astrology. I love the concept, and I don't mind the power, but I don't want it to run too rampant, so...

Changes to the Effect Roll

The Petition roll has a default One Hour time to create. Reducing it to ten minutes increases the difficulty by 2, and reducing it to one turn increases the difficulty by 4.

An excellent petition, a pre-planned fate, or precomputed horoscopes tend to add fewer dice to the Essence + College roll. If the character rolls 3-5 successes, add one die. If she rolls 6 or more successes, add two dice. Apply each of the three seperately; no more than 4 total dice may be added.

Ritual behaviour doesn't apply. Sorry. Multiple Sidereals add two dice each if their Essence is between half and equal the original roll; each Sidereal below that adds one more die. There is no limit to how many dice may be added; however, the astrology counts towards the limit of all participants, and may only be cancelled if all surviving participants agree to.

Changes to Limits

In addition to the original limit of no more than (Essence) effects on a single being, it is extremely dangerous to have too many effects active. The Sidereal may have up to her Essence in effects active safely. If activating further effects up to (her Essence x2), she rolls one additional Paradox die when activating the effect. After that, she rolls one further Paradox die for each new activation. (For example, a character with Essence 3 rolls one Paradox die each for her first three astrologies, two Paradox dice each for her next three, three dice for her seventh, four dice for her eight, and so on).

Characters may not deactivate any astrology once it is activated without serious difficulty. Dissolving an astrology requires ten minutes of effort and the expenditure of a temporary Willpower; the character takes automatic Paradox levels equal to the number of successes remaining in the effect's Duration. If an Astrology effect dissolves due to stronger effects being placed, its user takes one automatic Paradox point, as does the person placing the new effect on the target. If the person whose effect is being dissolved is also the person who is doing the dissolving, they DO take two points of Paradox (and aren't very good planners. Seriously.)

Resplendant Destinies that are dissolved by the use of Effect Points have a new effect; they continue to tangle the fate of the character in small ways. Halve the number of successes remaining in the Duration; that number of successes is how long the Destiny will continue to count towards the character's limits. This remains unless it is dissolved or removed as normal.

Changes to Effects

Having an Ascendant or Descendant effect which boosts or reduces dice by one has no additional requirement to the Essence + College roll.

The following effects require the character to spend one additional success: Target Number -1, Target Number +1

The following effects require the character to spend two additional successes: Difficulty -1, Difficulty +1, Virtue -1, Virtue +1

The following effects require the character to spend three additional successes: Gain one Willpower, Lose one Willpower.

In all cases, only a specific situation can cause this change ("Fighting Octavian", "Becoming King"; if the situation is more broad (anything that would be affected by a true specialty, such as "Gaining Power" or "Fighting Demons"), add one to the number of successes required.

Adjoran's Chains: This Effect lasts for (Essence +1) turns when used on demons, rather than for 13 turns.
