Abyssally aspected manses in Creation are rare things, so the few that exist are carefully designed by the Deathlords to produce very specific effects. The purpose of the Stone of Betrayal is to spread malice, bitterness and strife, and so when one is produced arrangements are swiftly made for it to fall into the hands of the other Exalted. It would probably also be possible to use it to warp a deathknight who was lax in his persecution of the living, but the uses of such a rare toy must be carefully considered.

When someone becomes attuned to the Stone of Betrayal, they gain an innate sixth sense for the loyalty of those around them. The Stone can detect the traceries of dark essence that follow traitors, and just before the betrayal is ripe, it alerts its owner to the existence, nature and perpetrator of the treachery. Typically, immediate action on the part of the attuned Exalt can thwart the plan. The stone does not give earlier warnings partially because the essence of treachery is a subtle thing, and partially because of the Deathlords' twisted sense of humour.

However, the Stone of Betrayal also possesses a hidden power that is not obvious to the casual observer. Even directly studying the hearthstone with All-Encompassing Sorcerer's Sight or an equivalent will almost never reveal anything unusual (although a comprehensive occult study of the manse that generates the Stone might).

Not only does the Stone detect betrayal, it ensures that there is always treachery to be found. Subtly, the same feelers of essence it uses to detect treacherous intentions also serve to incite revolt in those they brush across. There is no game mechanic for this, but the people who spend most time with the Exalt will be most affected, and their betrayals will be consequently deeper and more extensive.
