The Rainwater Jaguars

Named after their founder, Rainwater Jaguar, this shaped society serves as a predatory arm of the Ruby Court; the society dwells in Lost Zarlath, lairing among the ruins and tombs.

Nature

By three features they can be recognised: They have brilliantly coloured feathers rather than hair, their fingernails are long white claws, and their footprints are always moist and smell of fresh rain. Rainwater Jaguars are perfectly comfortable in trees; when their feet are planted on wood or leaves, they baance perfectly, and the surface always supports their weight. They can utterly ignore any poison with simple success on a Sta + Resistance roll. When a Rainwater Jaguar dies, his bones become forest serpents, who scatter away into the jungles. One moon later, they all meet in a pool of water and devour one another, until only one serpent remains, and a new Rainwater Jaguar steps out of its skin.

A Jaguar's beauty is so powerful as to be substantial; their presence enchants and addicts. In a Jaguar's presence, a created must make a Willpower + Temperance roll at difficulty 2 once per scene to avoid becoming addicted; see Shiftless Untamed Beauty (FF pp.166-7) for the effects of addiction.

Jaguars in anger are fearful to behold; they transform into monsters. When they descend into Bedlam, they gain mutation points equal to their permanent Willpower. Each Jaguar's Bedlam form is unique.

Finally, as shaped creatures, the Jaguars may wear Hearthstones and respire in Creation.

Castes

The Rainwater Jaguars have, as Fair Folk do, noble and common Castes, but unlike them, their common Caste is singular; common Jaguars are known as Spring Hunters and they favor no Charms.

The three noble Castes are Summer Warrior, Autumn Courtier, and Winter Scholar. They have seven great forms of Charms:

  • Earth-and-Sky Structure, which corresponds to the season of Spring and all Castes
  • Thunder Structure and Lightning Structure, which correspond to the Summer Warrior Caste
  • Mist Structure and Cloud Structure, which correspond to the Autumn Courtier Caste
  • and finally Ice Structure and Snow Structure, which correspond to the Winter Scholar Caste

In addition, Jaguars may learn Fair Folk Charms with no Grace prerequisite or a Ring prerequisite; they have Ring Graces but no others, and may attune to Ring-shaping weaponry. As possessors of Rings, they suffer from Ring Lures, Temperance-based Bedlam, and the Curse of Alienation.

The Oath of the Jaguars

Jaguars are under an oath similar to the Mountain Folk's. See their chapter for rules on Divergence. These are the behaviors that accrue it:

  • Unthinkable: Retract an action or statement. 5 Divergence.
  • Improper: Discard a passion or possession without adequate replacement. 3 Divergence.
  • Unlikely: React mildly to contradiction. 2 Divergence for doing so.
  • Proper: Accept challenges immediately. 2 Divergence for any delay.
  • Required: Act according to your beliefs. 3 Divergence for bending your actions to betray your beliefs in order to expediate a situation.

The Structure of the Vaikarya Oath

  • 2 Tenuous Earth Breath
  • 2 Buried Dragon Heart: Form of Wood.
  • 4 Eternally Rejuvenating Principle
  • 3 Mind-Stilling Cup, Staff, and Sword Shackles
  • 2 Expediently Fulfilling Flame
  • 1 Raging Vortex Form
  • 1 Shiftless Untamed Beauty
